Manhattan Swept by South Dakota State in Doubleheader

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Manhattan got swept in a doubleheader by South Dakota State in the final two games of the Jaspers' trip to the Golden State.
 
Game 1: South Dakota State 11, Manhattan 0
South Dakota State (14-7) scored four in the first and second innings before adding three more over the fourth and fifth.
 
Cylie Halvorson blasted a three-run shot after the first two batters of the game reached. Kelsey Lenox made it back-to-back homers with a solo shot before the first out of the game was recorded by Manhattan (1-10).
 
Lauren Rende singled to lead off the home half of the first but was retired on a fielder's choice.
 
After two of the first three batters were retired by the Manhattan starter Ava Metzger, Halvorson hit her second homer in as many innings. This one was a two-run shot.
 
The Jackrabbits got RBI singles in the fourth and fifth to tack on the final three runs.
 
Manhattan got runners in the third, fourth, and fifth innings but could not bring them around to score.
 
Metzger and Marika Deemer logged in innings in the circle for the Jaspers. Four different Jaspers had a hit against the pair of arms from South Dakota State.
 
Game 2: South Dakota State 6, Manhattan 3
The Jackrabbits started game two with a first-inning three-run homer. This one came off the bat of Lindsey Culver with two away.
 
Manhattan (1-11) did respond in the top of the second. Back-to-back singles to start the inning and a fielder's choice started things. Kylie Carr was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one away. Megan Gillooley made it a 3-1 game with an RBI groundout to second.
 
Manhattan pushed a run across in the fourth and fifth innings after a sacrifice fly restored a three-run lead for the Jackrabbits in the third. Gillooley drove in her second of the afternoon with a single in the fourth. In the fifth, Marika Deemer doubled in Jessie Rising to make it a 4-3 affair.
 
South Dakota State (15-7) got two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Manhattan went down in order in the top of the seventh.
 
Mollie Charest (0-4) went 5.1 innings for the Jaspers in the circle. The sophomore struck out a pair.
 
Up next for the Jaspers is a four-game weekend. On Saturday, Manhattan heads to Hartford for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Manhattan then hosts Wagner on Sunday at Gaelic for a doubleheader at noon Sunday's game against Wagner Traumatic Brain Injury awareness game. Michael Rising, who suffered a traumatic brain injury and brother of senior Jessie Rising, will walk out on the field with their dad to throw the first pitch out before the game.
