SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Manhattan finished the second day of action at UCSB 1-2. The Jaspers started the day by completing a suspended game against Princeton before facing Sacred Heart and the hosts.
On Sunday, Cat Clifford picked up her first win as head coach against Sacred Heart.
Game 1: Princeton 2, Manhattan 1 (F/8)
Princeton got the game's first run in the fourth after the game was suspended due to darkness in the third.
Princeton's (5-8) run in the fourth came on a sacrifice fly from Sophia Marsalo. Adrienne Chang came home after tripling with one away.
Lauren Rende kept Manhattan (0-8) alive and forced extra innings with a two-out double that brought in Gabriella Mazzotta. Mazzotta pinch ran for Jessie Rising after Rising led off the inning with a walk.
Ashley McDonald brought in the placed runner at second base to lead off the eighth for the Tigers. Manhattan was retired in order in the bottom of the inning.
Ava Metzger pitched a complete game for the Jaspers. The freshman scattered six hits over eight innings and allowed only one earned run.
Game 2: Manhattan 12, Sacred Heart 2 (F/5)
Against the Pioneers, the Jaspers scored early and often to pick up their first win of the season.
Manhattan scored twice in the top of the first before exploding for 10 runs in the third.
The game's second batter was Lauren Rende, and the junior deposited a Sarah Lawton offering over the fence to give Manhattan the 2-0 lead. After three consecutive outs, Jasper hitters Annie Moore followed with a double but was stranded.
In the 10-run third, the first five hitters all reached. Tajiana Pickett brought in Moore with a single before Jessie Rising singled through the left side to make it 4-0. Megan Hedlund blasted a three-run homer off a 2-1 offering from Lawton to push the advantage to 7-0.
After three consecutive hits, Render doubled to right-center on a 0-2 pitch to bring home two more Jaspers. The final hit of the inning was another three-run homer for the Jaspers. This one was hit by Moore with runners at second and third.
Sacred Heart scored single runs in the third and fourth innings off Rising. Rising finished the game with four strikeouts over five innings.
Rende finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Moore was also 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Hedlund walked along with her three-run homer.
Game 3: UCSB 5, Manhattan 1
UCSB got one run in the bottom of the first and fourth innings before adding three in the sixth.
Ashley Donaldson drove in four of the five runs for UCSB (8-16) out of the seventh spot in the order. Donaldson doubled down the right-field line in the fourth before adding a three-run home run in the sixth. Both hits came with two outs.
Lauren Rende drove in the lone for Manhattan (1-9). In the fourth, the junior doubled down the left-field line to score Gabi Mills. Kaitlyn Holly tried to score too but was cut down at home.
Marika Deemer went six innings for the Jaspers in the circle, allowing five runs, of which only two were earned.
The Jaspers return to the diamond for two games against South Dakota State before coming back east.
