LAKE CHARLES, La. – The second day of the Evangeline Bank and Trust Invitational saw the Manhattan softball team fall to Memphis and the hosts, McNeese State.
Game 1: Memphis 11, Manhattan 6
The scoring started early and often between the Tigers and Jaspers.
Both sides scored a pair of runs in their halves of the first inning. Annie Moore tied the game for the Jaspers with a two-run home run in the bottom half.
After Memphis retook the lead with four runs in the top of the second, Manhattan answered with four of their own. A double from Kaitlyn Flood and a single from Marika Deemer plated the first two runs. Ava Metzger drove in Deemer after Flood scored on a fielder's choice.
The Tigers once again retook the lead in the fifth. Memphis plated four more runs on four hits. Aliana Zaval homered in the top of the seventh to provide the final margin.
Moore finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Flood and Mazzotta had multi-hit efforts.
Game 2: McNeese State 12, Manhattan 0 (5 innings)
The hosts of this weekend's tournament got one early and then put up 11 more in the third and fourth.
Jill Poullard hit a solo shot in the first on a 1-1 offering from Metzger.
In the third, the Cowboys added five runs on three hits. Alayis Seneca and Toni Parrin had RBI hits. One inning later, four straight hits brought in three runs to make it 10-0.
The Jaspers were limited to three hits. Moore, Flood, and Deemer each had one.
Manhattan returns to the diamond on Sunday morning for the final game of the weekend against UNLV.
