RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan women's basketball team welcomes the pair of Buffalo institutions for a couple of MAAC contests this week, with Canisius on Thursday and the Purple Eagles of Niagara on Saturday.
For Thursday's tilt with the Golden Griffins, the game will be broadcast on ESPN+, with live stats provided HERE. Tickets for the game in Draddy Gym can be purchased HERE. For Saturday, ESPN3 will carry the game, while live stats can be found HERE. Tickets may be purchased HERE.
Canisius arrives in Riverdale with a 5-6 record but a spotless 2-0 in the MAAC early on. The last time the Golden Griffins took to the hardwood, they emerged on top of MAAC foe Marist, 65-61. The other MAAC win came against Rider, 74-67. Both of those victories came at home, and Thursday will be their first test on the road in MAAC play.
The Golden Griffin's coach, Sahar Nusseibeh, is no stranger to Draddy Gym, having served on the Manhattan coaching staff from 2016-2019.
The last time Manhattan shared the court with the Golden Griffins was at last year's MAAC Championship in Atlantic City, where they drew each other in the first round. Manhattan advanced with a 61-49 win and featured Dee Dee Davis' 1,000th career point.
In non-conference play, the Golden Griffins opened their season with a comeback win over Buffalo. They also earned victories against Colgate and St. Bonaventure earlier in the season.
As of late, Canisius has got strong play from freshman Sisi Eleko, who has earned Rookie of the Week honors from the conference the last two weeks. During that stretch, Eleko averaged 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds a game.
When Niagara steps into Draddy on Thursday, Manhattan will look to avenge last year's sweep the Purple Eagles pulled off against them last season. Niagara, who enters the week at 2-8, has been led by the Parker sisters, Angel and Aaliyah.
Between the two, they have accounted for 48 percent of the Purple Eagle offense, scoring 288 of the team's 594 thus far. The sisters are second and third in the MAAC in scoring, with Aaliyah contributing 16.7 points per game and Angel adding 15.1 per game. Aaliyah is leading the conference with 3.7 swipes per game.
