HAMDEN, CONN.—The Manhattan women's basketball team fell on the road Monday night to Quinnipiac at M&T Bank Arena, 69-55.
Manhattan falls to 3-7, 1-1 in the MAAC while Quinnipiac improves to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in conference tilts.
"Tough road loss tonight. Our lack of valuing the ball leading to 23 turnovers was the difference," Said head coach Heather Vulin. "I thought Dee Dee Davis was sensational for us with 24 pts and 11 rebs and 4 assists."
It was a tough first half for the Jaspers but in the second quarter the Green and White showed some life. Petra Juric kicked it off, connecting on a jumper off a feed from Dee Dee Davis. Following a Bobcat turnover, Davis drilled a three right in the Bobcats defender's face, making the score 24-15. The next trip down the court for the Jaspers ended with a Leyla Ozturk layup, which was followed up by a pair of free throws by Davis, making the score 24-19.
Rose Caverly of the Bobcats shut the Jasper's run down by connecting on a deep ball, getting the lead up to 27-19.
The Bobcats converted on an and-one by Mikala Morris on their first possession of the second half. The Jaspers kept chipping away at the Bobcat's lead, and Emily LaPointe provided a spark in the back half of the quarter.
Coming out of the third quarter media timeout, LaPointe connected on a three right in front of the Jaspers bench. On the next trip down, she finished through contact for an and-one and converted on the free throw, making the score 43-35. By the end of the quarter, the lead was down to five, 43-38, and the Jasper defense kept the Bobcats off the board after the media timeout.
In the fourth quarter, Bella Nascimento found her groove, scoring 10 points in the quarter, with seven of those coming in the back end of the quarter. Manhattan forced the Bobcats to call a timeout with 1:43 left. The Jaspers were on the verge of the defensive stop they needed, forcing Cur'Tiera Haywood to throw up a prayer from close to mid-court, but the Bobcats got the offensive rebound and put it away, sealing the win.
Davis finished with a game-highs in points (24) and rebounds (11) for her third double-double of the campaign. She shot an efficient 8-19 from the field and 2-4 from beyond the arc.
Manhattan returns to action one more time before the holiday, hosting LIU in the team's non-conference finale on Thursday in Draddy Gym. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
