RIVERDALE, N.Y. –
Caitlin Alcoba scored in the 40
th minute, and that was all Manhattan needed to collect all three points and a win over Iona on Saturday.
Alcoba's first goal of the year came off a cross from
Julia Nicholas from the right wing. The cross bounced around in the box before Alcoba controlled it and put it in the back of the net. The cross hit a few different players before Alcoba gained control in the center of the box.
Nicholas' assist was her second season, giving the sophomore four points on the year. Alcoba's goal came on her only shot of the game.
A few minutes before Alcoba supplied the lone goal,
Brooke Zimmer put a header off the left post.
Manhattan (3-5-2, 1-3-1 MAAC) limited Iona (7-4-3, 2-3) to four shots on goal, and
Kim Mains stopped them all. Mains collected her fourth shutout of the season.
Two of Mains' four saves came inside the final 25 minutes of the match. Mains stopped Samantha Hogan in the 78
th minute and Sofia Banegas in the 85
th.
The Jaspers had a few chances to double their lead in the second half. The best came when Nicholas got on the end of a pass inside the box, but the last Iona defender blocked her chance to score. The block kept the score 1-0 in favor of the Jaspers.
Saturday's game was the Jaspers' Mental Health Awareness Game benefitting Morgan's Message. Manhattan wore shirts in warmups with Morgan's Message's logo on it, and the team collected donations when fans arrived at Gaelic Park to benefit the non-profit organization. Manhattan's next three games will be on the road. The first of the three is on Wednesday at Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m.
