BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Jaspers dropped a road match this week to the Golden Griffins of Canisus in a three-set match with final scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-10.
The first two sets were very competitive, with the final scores being within six points. Julia Menocal scored the most kills today between both teams with 15, five more than the Griffins leader, Ella Loussia.
In the first set, Manhattan opened the set by scoring the first point of the set off an attack error. The beginning of the set was very close with each team taking the lead from each other or tying the set. However, Canisius was able to begin to pull away after they went on two back to back runs scoring eight out of the last seven points to make the score 15-8. The Jaspers answered back by scoring two points of their own, one off a kill by Menocal, and the other off a kill by Camila Gomez. This however was not enough for the Jaspers to get back into the set, with the final score being 25-19.
Manhattan was able to take an early lead in the second set, scoring the first four points, putting the Jaspers up 4-0. Canisius broke this up by scoring a kill setting the score at 4-1. However, Manhattan answered back again and scored three points, one of which was a service ace by Teresa Garza. Canisius went on a five-point run around mid-set which threw the Jaspers off their rhythm. The Griffins began to make a come back and took the lead at the end of a three point run making the score 12-11. The Jaspers unfortunately would not retake the lead for the remainder of the set.
The offensive leaders of the game were Menocal and Gomez, together making up 92% of the teams kills. Julieanne McKee had 18 assists for game, however she did not break her assist record for the fourth night in a row. For defense, Sophia Lotto is again at the top for digs with 8.
The Jaspers play again tomorrow against Niagara on Sunday Oct. 30th at 1 p.m. in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
