RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan fell to Marist Sunday, 3-1, at home on Saturday. The final scores of the game were 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-12.
In the first set, the Jaspers were able o go on a six to nothing run, taking whatever momentum the Red Foxes came in with away. Every single kill in said run was assisted by Julieanne McKee, who broke her season high assist record last game against Siena. Manhattan maintained a healthy lead in the set until Marist went on a six-point run of their own. This was broken up by a kill from Julia Menocal who tied the game back at 19-19. Towards the end of the set, Manhattan executed a five point run kicked off by an attack error and followed up by two kills by Menocal. Manhattan took the set 25-23.
In an extremely close second set, Marist was able to take the set with the final score being 25-23. The Jaspers were again able to take the early lead, scoring the first two points off of kills by Camila Gomez. The second set continued to be very close with the score being tied up 11 times. The longest run of the set was achieved by Manhattan, being a four point run, started by a bad set, followed by a kill from Menocal.
The Red Foxes had the momentum for the third and fourth set, keeping a healthy lead against Manhattan that proved difficult to cut into. In the third set the Jaspers were able to shave down the Red Foxes lead to five from eight but could not take the set. Unfortunately for the Jaspers, after taking two sets in a row, Marist was able to take the third with the momentum they build, with a final set score of 25-12.
Leaders of Manhattans offense were Menocal with 21 kills and Gomez with 15. McKee absolutely blew away her previous assist season-high with 39 assists tonight. This is the third match in a row where McKee surpassed her season-high. Menocal also led the defense with 10 digs, followed by Kelly Markowski with nine.
"With Marist being one of the best teams in the MACC we are very happy with our performance, taking the first set and being very close in the second. I'm also very proud of them because this is the first game that Teresa Garza played a middle blocker and despite her height she did very well in the position," said head coach Mauro Miletic.
Manhattan plays again on Saturday Oct 29th at 12:00 p.m. against Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y.
