No. 6 Manhattan To Open MAAC Championship Play At No. 3 Iona

- No. 6 Manhattan (17-13) will open play in the 2021 MAAC Championship against No. 3 Iona (21-10) at Donald E. Walshe at Rice Oval.

The Worldwide Leader
This weekend's three-game set with Iona will streamed on ESPN+.

With A Series Win ... the Jaspers will advance to next weekend's MAAC Tournament Championship to be held at the seed of the highest remaining team. 

Close Calls
* Manhattan is an impressive 9-5 in games decided by two runs or less.
* The Jaspers also are 3-0 in extra-inning affairs.

Road Warriors
* Manhattan went 11-7 on the road this season, compared to 6-6 at home.

Ascending The Mountaintop
* The Jaspers were the lone team to win the season-series with MAAC Regular Season Champion Monmouth, taking three-of-four on the road.

  • Head Coach Tom Pardalis is making his eighth appearance in the MAAC Softball Championship, and holds an 8-14 all-time record.

  • The Jaspers were last the No. 6 seed in 2014, and advanced to the finals before losing to Iona.

* This year, Williams (Monmouth) claimed MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors, while Moore (Canisius/QU) and Chirorazzi (Niagara) each won MAAC Player of the Week accolades.

This Year Against Iona ...
* The Jaspers' last four games have come against the Gaels.
* In those four games, Chiorazzi is batting a team-best .357 (5-of-14) with a home run, three RBI, three stolen bases and a run.
* Sophomore Gabriella Mazzotta is batting .333 (4-of-12) with three RBI against the Gaels, while junior Jessie Rising is also batting .333 (3-of-9) with two runs.
* Moore also checks in with a .308 average (4-of-13).
* Williams went 1-1 with two complete games, 11 strikeouts, against three walks, and a 2.15 ERA over 13.0 IP.
* She also fired a complete game shutout in the Jaspers' lone win of the season series at Iona, striking out four over 6.0 innings of three-hit ball.

* Manhattan is first in the MAAC and 21st nationally with a .975 field percentage.

In The Rankings
* Sophomore Marika Deemer is third in the MAAC with a 2.03 ERA, while Williams is fifth with a 2.13 mark.
* Williams is also second in the MAAC and 51st nationally with fewest hits per seven innings (4.7).
* Her eight wins are tied for fourth in the league, while her 68 strikeouts are fifth.
* Chiorazzi's five home runs are tied for fourth in the MAAC, to go along with a team-best 16 RBI.

Other Team Leaders
* Gebhardt is the lone Jasper to play in and start all 30 games, and is batting .280 (28-of-100) with a team-best 17 runs, five doubles, one triple, two home runs and eight RBI.
* Sophomore Lauren Rende has a team-best nine extra-base hits, fueled by a team-leading seven doubles.
* Mazzotta registered a team-best nine stolen bases.

Coach Pardalis Quick Hits
* Is 271-272-1 in this his 12th season at the helm of the Jaspers.
* In 2017, Pardalis led Manhattan to a school-record 34 wins.
* The season prior, he guided the Jaspers to 30 victories, including a school-record 14 during MAAC play, which was the Green & White's first 30-win season in 23 years.
* In 2015, he mentored unanimous MAAC Player of the Year Elena Bowman, as she became just the second player in program history to receive the award, and the first since Jennifer Drum in 1995. 
* Inducted into the Connecticut Scholastic and Collegiate Softball Hall of Fame in 2019.
