Riverdale, NY - Iona swept a doubleheader from Manhattan by scores of 7-0 and 4-3 in the regular season finale at Gaelic Park.
The Jaspers fall to 17-13, while the Gaels improve to 21-10.
Game Two
Iona rallied for a 4-3 win in the nightcap to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The visitors opened the scoring with a first-inning run, but the damage could have been worse but graduate student Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT / St. Joseph's) stranded a pair in scoring position with back-to-back strikeouts.
Manhattan immediately tied it in its first trip to the plate with a single run. Sophomore Lauren Rende (Ardsley, NY / Ardsley) led off with a walk, before quickly stealing second. She then moved to third on a Daniela Chiorazzi (Sr., Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) single, and scored on a single off the bat of sophomore Marika Deemer (Perrsyburg, OH / Perrysburg).
The Jaspers would take its first lead of the day with a single run in the fifth inning. Junior Jessie Rising (Egg Harbor, NJ / Pinelands) led off with a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a fly out. Sophomore Gabriella Mazzotta (Somers, NY / Somers) then plated Rising with a RBI single.
Unfortunately, Iona would respond with three runs in the top of the sixth inning in assuming a 4-2 advantage.
In the bottom part of the frame, the Green & White got one back when Rising, who singled with one out, scored on a passed ball.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as Manhattan would get as the Jaspers would strand a runner at third to close out the frame, and at second to end the game.
Chiorazzi notched two of the six Green & White hits and added a stolen base to pace Manhattan on offense.
Williams (8-2) was saddled with the loss, striking out seven while yielding four runs on 10 hits in a complete-game effort.
Game One
Iona took the opener 7-0 count as Kara Zazzaro fired a complete-game six-hit shutout.
Rende led the way on offense for the Jaspers, finishing up 2-for-2 with a double and a walk, while Rising went 2-for-3.
Senior RHP Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA / Herkimer County CC) led the pitching unit, firing 1.1 innings of scoreless ball with a strikeout.
Manhattan will now wait for its seed and location assignments for the upcoming MAAC Championship, which will begin on Saturday, May 8.
