Manhattan Set To Lock Horns With No. 6 Arkansas

- Manhattan (22-14) will open Fayetteville Regional play against No. 6 National Seed Arkansas (40-9) at Bogle Park on Friday, May 21 at 1:00 pm (EST).

Manhattan NCAA Regional Snapshot
* The Jaspers will be making their second-ever NCAA Softball Championship appearance.
* Manhattan will then square off with either South Dakota State or Stanford on day two of the four team double-elimination regional.
* Friday's game will be played on the 22nd anniversary of the Jaspers' last appearance in an NCAA Regional, a 4-3 loss to LIU on May 21, 1999 in Amherst, MA.
* Manhattan and Arkansas previously met on February 23, 2018 with the Razorbacks registering a 9-1 (6) win in Madeira Beach, FL.

- A win would be Manhattan's first NCAA Regional victory in program history (0-2).

- Arkansas holds an all-time record of 710-749-1 in this its 25th season of sponsoring softball.
- The Razorbacks are making their 10th appearance in NCAA Regional play, and hold a 10-18 mark.
- Arkansas will be hosting a regional for the second time in program history, previously winning the 2018 Fayetteville in advancing to the Super Regionals.

- The Razorbacks placed five student-athletes on the All-SEC First and Second Teams, led SEC Co-Pitcher of the Year Mary Haff (23-6; 1.58 ERA, 5 saves, 180 K, 177.0 IP)
- Braxton Burnside (.347, 24 home runs, 51 RBI) joined Haff on the All-SEC First Team, while Danielle Gibson (.363, 15 home runs, 51 RBI), Hannah McEwen (.321, 4 home runs, 15 RBI) and Autumn Stroms (7-1, 1.39 ERA, 4 saves, 75.2 IP, 57 K) all earned Second Team honors.
- Burnside's 24 home runs are second nationally, while Arkansas is fifth nationally with a SEC-best 89 long balls.
- Courtney Deifel, the 2021 SEC Coach of the Year, is 187-115 in this her sixth season at the helm of the Razorbacks (214-142; overall record).
- Arkansas is 5-0, all-time, against the MAAC, having gone 4-0 against Marist.

 Leading Off
* Graduate student Nicole Williams was named the MAAC Most Outstanding Performer after earning all five Manhattan victories in leading the Jaspers to their second-ever MAAC Championship.
* In the two-week event, Williams went 5-0 with 42 strikeouts, a 1.78 ERA and four complete games over 35.1 innings while limiting opposing hitters to a scant .228 average.
* In Buffalo, she was even better pitching every inning in going 3-0 with 28 strikeouts and a 0.91 ERA, with opposing batters hitting just .091.
* Last Thursday, in arguably Williams' most dominant start of the year, she struck out a season-high 13 while scattering a pair of hits and three walks in a 2-0 win over No. 4 Fairifeld.
* Williams followed that up by striking out 12 and allowing just one unearned run over 9.0 innings in a 2-1 walk-off extra-inning victory against No. 8 Marist.
* She concluded her impressive two-week run with an impressive 128-pitchg outing in the finale, striking out three.

Offensive Highlights
Manhattan-Fairfield - W-2-0 
* The Jaspers opened the scoring with a fifth-inning run. Senior Victoria Alonso led off with a single, and would come around to score on junior Annie Moore's two-out RBI single.
* In the top of the seventh, sophomore Gabriella Mazzotta led off with a single, before stealing to second and scored on a fielding error. 
* Alonso, sophomore Marika Deemer, Mazzotta, junior Annie Moore and classmate Jessie Rising all registered hits.

Manhattan-Marist - W-2-1 (9)
* Graduate Student Christine Gebhardt plated pinch-runner freshman Lily Fish with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up at 1-1. 
* Moore won the game with a two-out, bases loaded RBI single in giving the Jaspers a 2-1 victory.
* Senior Daniela Chiorazzi, Gebhardt and Moore all registered multiple-hits to pace the Green & White. 

Manhattan-Canisius - W-6-3
* Alonso led off the third with a double down the left-field line, before coming in to score on senior Emma Kindblom's RBI double.
* After Canisius battled back to tie the game, Moore crushed a leadoff home run to start the fourth to reclaim the lead for the Jaspers at 2-1.
* Manhattan added to its advantage with a single run in the fifth as Rising led off with a double, before  scoring on sophomore Lauren Rende's RBI double.
* In top of the sixth, Mazzotta reached via a two-out fielder's choice grounder, before stealing second. She then scored on an Alonso RBI single in stretching the lead out to 4-1.
* With the lead now at one in the seventh, Moore drew a two-out walk, before Deemer crushed a two-run homer to provide the final 6-3 score.
* Alonso finished up 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI to highlight an eight-hit attack.

Two-Out Fire
* Last weekend, six of the Jaspers' 10 runs were scored with two outs.

Interesting
* Manhattan is 16-8 away from home on the season, compared to 6-6 at home.
* The Jaspers are an impressive 11-6 in games decided by two runs or less.
* The Green & White is also 4-0 in extra-inning affairs.

MAAC Quarterfinal Recap
* No. 6 Manhattan took two of three from No. 3 Iona to qualify for the four-team tournament in Buffalo.
* The Jaspers won the opener by a 6-2 count, before dropping game two 3-1. 
* Manhattan then erupted for season-highs in runs (11) and hits (13) in winning the series with an 11-5 victory in the finale.
* Moore hit a blistering .600 (6-of-10) with a home run, five RBI and four runs against Golden Griffin pitching, while Deemer checked in at .545 (6-for-11) with three RBI and two runs.
* Mazzotta batted .333 (3-for-9) with a home run and three runs, while  Alonso also hit .333 (3-for-9) with five RBI.
* In the third and deciding game, Moore was 4-for-5 with four RBI, while Alonso also drove in four runs.
* Williams struck out 11 in a complete-game effort in the opener, before striking out three over 5.1 innings in the finale and was the pitcher of record in both games.

* This year, Williams (Monmouth) claimed MAAC Pitcher of the Week honors, while Moore (Canisius/QU) and Chirorazzi (Niagara) each won MAAC Player of the Week accolades.

* Manhattan is first in the MAAC and 30th nationally with a .973 field percentage.

In The Rankings
* Williams' 13 wins and 110 strikeouts (120th NCAA) are third in the MAAC, while her 2.02 ERA is fourth.
* Deemer's 1.89 ERA is third in the MAAC, while her 4.92 hits allowed per nine innings is second in the league and 62nd nationally.
* Williams is sixth in the league and 83rd nationally in surrendering 5.2 hits per seven innings.
* Moore and Chiorazzi are each tied for fourth in the MAAC with five home runs.

Other Team Leaders
* Gebhardt is the lone Jasper to play in and start all 36 games, and is batting .259 (30-of-116) with 19 runs, six doubles, one triple, two home runs and nine RBI.
* Rende has a team-best 10 extra-base hits, fueled by a team-leading eight doubles.
* Mazzotta has registered a team-best 11 stolen bases.

In The Record Books ...
* Williams is sixth in school history with 35 career wins, while her 367 career strikeouts are second in program history.
* Gebhardt is fifth in the all-time Manhattan annals with 36 doubles, seventh with seven triples and ninth with 175 hits.

* In 2016, he guided the Jaspers to 30 victories, including a pre-Covid-19 school-record 14 during MAAC play, which was the Green & White's first 30-win season in 23 years.
* In 2015, he mentored unanimous MAAC Player of the Year Elena Bowman, as she became just the second player in program history to receive the award, and the first since Jennifer Drum in 1995. 
* He was inducted into the Connecticut Scholastic and Collegiate Softball Hall of Fame in 2019.
