Riverdale, NY - Manhattan stretched its winning streak to five games thanks to taking both ends of today's home-opening doubleheader from Quinnipiac at Gaelic Park.
The Jaspers won by scores of 10-1 (6) and 4-2 in moving to 5-3, while the Bobcats fall to 1-9.
Leading the way for the Green & White was senior Victoria Alonso (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland), went 4-for-6 with four runs, two RBI and a stolen base, and junior Annie Moore (Northridge, CA / El Camino Real), who was 4-for-6 with a home run and five RBI.
Game One
Manhattan broke open a close game late in posting a 10-1 win over Quinnipiac in the opener.
Moore went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to pace an eight-hit offense. Alonso also reached base safely three times with three runs and two hits, while Christine Gebhardt (GS, Middletown, NJ / Middletown North) singled, drew walks and scored twice to fuel the offense.
The Jaspers opened the scoring with a run in the first inning, before plating five in the fifth and four in the sixth inning to complete the 10-1 mercy-rule win.
The 10 runs of support were more than enough for senior Kali Puppolo (Adams, MA / Herkimer County CC), who struck out four while yielding just one run on two hits and a walk over 6.0 dominating innings in moving to 2-1.
Game Two
Manhattan took the nightcap by a 4-2 count to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The Jaspers dented the scoreboard in the second inning thanks to a two-run homer off the bat of sophomore Kaitlyn Flood (Southbury, CT / Pomperaug).
After Quinnipiac tied the game up with two runs in the top of the fifth, Manhattan answered with a pair of singles from Alonso and Moore in the bottom part of the frame.
Senior Jessie Rising (Little Egg Harbor, NJ / Pinelands) closed out the game with 2.0 hitless innings in earning her first save of the year.
Graduate student Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT / St. Joseph's) earned the win, striking out three while yielding two runs on three hits and two walks over 5.0 innings.
Both Alonso and Moore notched two hits to pace an eight-hit offensive attack.
Manhattan will next host Canisius on Friday, April 2 with doubleheader action slated to start at 12:00 pm.
