Jaspers Head To Marist This Weekend

Poughkeepsie, NY - Manhattan women's basketball (9-12, 6-6 MAAC) will make the trek upstate Saturday, February 8 for the Jaspers' second showdown with Marist (16-4, 9-2 MAAC) this season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm on ESPN3. 

GAME NOTES

Last Outing
The Jaspers tried to earn their second-straight come-from-behind victory, getting within six of Siena with a minute to play on February 6 in Draddy. But the Saints were able to outlast Manhattan in the match-up, scoring seven of the game's last 10 points for a 59-49 MAAC win.

Julie Høier (Aabyhoej, Denmark / Marselisborg Gymnasium) earned a season-high 12 rebounds, including seven on the defensive glass, to lead all players in the game. She was assisted on the boards by Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) who added 11 rebounds of her own. Manhattan out-rebounded the Saints 42-33, marking the first time this season the Jaspers have lost when out-rebounding their opponent. Emily LaPointe (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) led the Jasper offense with 10 points, the 16th time this season the freshman has scored in double-figures and the 12th time she has led the team in scoring. Høier and Warley both contributed eight points.

To the LaPointe
LaPointe earned her league-high sixth MAAC Rookie of the Week award on February 3 after leading the Jasper offense with 18.5 points per game over two games last week. LaPointe leads the squad in scoring, averaging 12.8 points per game (12th in the MAAC). She also ranks fourth for three-pointers made (2.1 per game). LaPointe averages 31.1 minutes per game, the most of any freshman in the MAAC.

Warley the Warrior
Courtney Warley ranks 22nd in the MAAC for scoring (10.2 points per game), while ranking third in rebounding (8.2 per game). With 2.6 steals per game, she is second in the league and ranks 30th in all of Division I.

Upcoming Milestones
Warley now has 597 rebounds for her career, currently 15th all-time and just three away from tying Caitlin Flood (2004-2008) for 14th. Warley is also 25 steals away from tying for 15th on that all-time list and one block away from 100. She currently sits in fifth on Manhattan's all-time blocks list.

Gabby Cajou (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) is four assists away from tying Joann Nwafili (2004-08) for 15th all-time and 26 away from the program's top 10. She is also 12 steals away from tying Michelle Pacheco (2006-10) at 15th on that all-time list. 

About the Red Foxes
With 73.4 points per game, second-place Marist holds the MAAC's best offense, defeating opponents by a margin of 11.3. As a team, the Red Foxes shoot 48.1 percent from the floor, with nearly 20 assists per game. Alana Gilmer and Rebekah Hand both average more than 17 points per game for Marist, while Grace Vander Weide holds a shooting percentage of .435. 

Previous Meeting
Manhattan staged a second-half comeback against Marist on January 18, getting within three of the Red Foxes in the fourth quarter. But Marist was able to sustain the Manhattan defensive pressure, eeking out a 71-66 victory over the Jaspers in Draddy. LaPointe finished with a team-high 18 points, going 4-9 from three and adding three assists for the Jaspers. Høier nabbed her second double-double of the year with a season-high 14 points and a game-high (tied) 10 boards. Høier also contributed three assists.

All-Time Series
Manhattan is 25-36 all-time against Marist. In the Jaspers' last trip to McCann Arena, on January 27, 2019, Manhattan defeated the Red Foxes 69-51. Lynette Taitt (Bronx, NY / Bishop Loughlin) put in a career-high 20 points and nabbed a game-high four steals. Høier added a career-high 16 points to he Jaspers' offense, going a near-perfect 5-6 from the floor, in addition to pulling down nine rebounds.
