Brookville, NY – LIU broke a 5-5 stalemate with a pair of goals, before staving off Manhattan by a 7-5 count on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Carmella Liscio (Blauvelt, NY / Tappan Zee) notched two goals and won three draw controls, while freshman Ashley Gambardella (Bethpage, NY / Plainedge) made four saves in a losing effort for Manhattan.
Liscio opened the scoring with a goal 61 seconds into the match, and senior Deb Peifer (Collegeville, PA / Methacton) capped the scoring in the first half with unassisted score with 9 minutes to play in the half.
LIU, which led 3-2 at the break, couldn't shake free for the Jaspers as the visitors twice tied the game in the second half. Liscio scored her second of the game to level the score at 4-4 with 18:49 left to play. After the Sharks briefly regained the lead, sophomore Grace Lipponer (Lake Grove, NY / Sachem North) tied it up again with 15:44 remaining. However, LIU closed the game with the final two goals to secure a 7-5 win.
Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, February 15 at 1:00 pm, when the Jaspers travel to Philadelphia to take on Drexel.
