Manhattan drops to 12-19 overall this season and 1-5 in the MAAC. Marist jumps to 21-16 and 7-1 in the conference.
Game 1: Marist 10, Manhattan 1 (6 innings)
- The Marist bats came alive quickly in game one, as the Red Foxes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
- Two innings later, Ali Milam homered to center field with one on to make it 4-0. Marist teammate Morgan Gianelle followed up with a home run of her own in the fourth to make it 5-0, before Brandi Coon doubled to right field in the fifth to make it 6-0 Marist.
- Gebhardt responded in the bottom of the fifth, doubling to left field with one out. Catcher Daniela Chiorazzi (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) then knocked a single to to center field to send Gebhardt home and put the Jaspers on the board.
- But the Red Foxes ran away with the game in the top of the sixth. Hunter Hand homered to center field, followed later by an RBI single from Coon. Claire Oberdorf hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in the final run of the game, extending the Red Foxes' lead to 10-1.
- Marist pitcher Calista Phippen, who went the first four innings without giving up a hit, faced just three Jasper batters in the bottom of the sixth, forcing the game to end on the run rule.
- Manhattan starting pitcher Jessie Rising (Little Egg Harbor, NJ / Pinelands) went 4.2 innings for the Jaspers, letting up five runs on six hits and striking out five. She was relieved in the fourth by Stephanie Kristo (San Jose, CA / Archbishop Mitty), before returning in the sixth. Rising is now 4-7 on the season.
- Manhattan starting pitcher Kayla McDermott (Garnerville, NY / North Rockland) held the Red Foxes quiet through two innings in game two, letting up just one hit in nine batters faced.
- With one out in the bottom of the second, Gebhardt singled to reach base, followed by another single from Adriana Gambino (Stamford, CT / Westhill).
- Next, Dominique Palagruto (Sewell, NJ / Washington Township) reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Gambino and moving Gebhardt to third on an error. But Marist pitcher Megan Beiermeister was able to get the Red Foxes out of the inning, striking out Rising and forcing Kat Prevo (San Diego, CA / Our Lady of Peace) to line out to left field.
- Marist struck in the top of the third, when Coon singled to center field, allowing a Marist baserunner to score on the throw in. Oberdorf then earned another SAC fly, this time to left field, to drive in a run and make it 2-0 Marist.
- The Red Foxes would pick up two more runs as Beiermeister kept the Jaspers at bay, allowing just one more Manhattan hit for the rest of the game. She would finish with seven strikeouts in just 27 batters faced.
- McDermott (4-9) went 5.0 innings for Manhattan, striking out five and allowing seven hits. Rising pitched in relief for 2.0 innings, letting up just two hits and no runs.
Manhattan returns to action Wednesday, April 10 at St. John's for a single-game starting at 3:00 pm.
