The Jaspers notch their first MAAC victory of the season and now stand at 6-3 overall. Canisius falls to 0-1 in conference play and 0-9 overall.
Burgess netted the game-deciding strike, her sixth goal at the time, to help the Jaspers pull ahead after Canisius sported a 10-8 advantage. Just 45 seconds after that, Burgess received a pass from freshman attacker Cassidy Burns (Massapequa, NY / Plainedge) and potted her final tally for Manhattan's largest lead at that point.
The contest featured eight ties and nine lead changes as both teams went back and forth in the first 45 minutes of the battle. Both sides combined for 15 goals after a 5-5 deadlock in the first stanza.
Burgess finished with the seven goals, while senior tri-captain Molly Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, NY / Lakeland), senior midfielder Caitlin Murphy (Carmel, NY / Carmel) and freshman attacker Grace Lipponer (Lake Grove, NY / Sachem North) tallied multiple scores as well.
Jourdan Roemer was the Golden Griffins' leading scorer with three goals and two assists. Bryar Cummings and Jen Reininger also had a pair of tallies.
Manhattan aims for a 2-0 start to conference competition on Wednesday, March 27 as it hosts Marist at 4:00 pm.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Including a career-high, the seven goals from Burgess are the most by a MAAC player this season. It is the third-highest output this season in Division I women's lacrosse.
- The last Jasper to score seven goals in a game came on April 19, 2009 when Caralyn Hickey '10 dropped seven against Saint Francis in a 21-11 victory.
- The J's surpass last season's win total, reaching six games for the first time since 2009.
- Manhattan's 15 goals are a season-high.
- Fitzpatrick extended her multi-goal streak to 13 straight affairs.
- Murphy now has six multi-point games this year, including five in a row and three straight with a 2-1-3 line.
- Junior midfielder Emily Sandford (Floral Park, NY / Sacred Heart) notched a career-high four assists and tied a personal-best with five points, which she last accomplished on March 12, 2017.
- Burns recorded three assists for the third time this year. With 13 helpers, she's five shy of Rory Maguire '02's single-season rookie record. She also controlled a career-high seven draws.
- Lipponer earned her sixth multi-point effort in 2019.
- Though both sides finished with 18 ground balls, Manhattan outgained Canisius 8-4 in the second half.
- Fitzpatrick and Lipponer both led the way with four ground balls, while the latter caused two turnovers.
- The Kelly Green and White also generated 22 shots on goal out of 26 shots.
FIRST HALF
- Manhattan's first goal came 4:33 in off a free position shot from Lipponer from the left wing of the eight-meter arc.
- Sandford darted around the right slot and found an open Burgess in front of the net to tie the game at two at the 20:22 mark.
- Trailing 4-2 halfway through the period, freshman midfielder Annie Freshour (Smithtown, NY / Smithtown East) passed her free position attempt to Burgess, who finished from the left post.
- With 6:17 until halftime, Burns sneaked around the net and waited for Burgess to cut in front, leading to a score to make it 4-4.
- From the right side, Lipponer connected with Fitzpatrick for a one-timer down the right side with 3:36 on the clock for Manhattan's third-straight score.
SECOND HALF
- Lipponer and Burgess threaded the twine 3:06 apart within the first five minutes of the half.
- After two straight goals from the Golden Griffins pushed the lead to the visitor's favor, Burgess countered off a Burns pass at 21:59 to even the duel at eight.
- Murphy and Sandford each drew fouls and lit the lamp on free positions, scoring 59 seconds part at the midway point to make it 10-10.
- The go-ahead goal from Burgess came when she raced from behind the net and tucked a shot in past goalkeeper Shannon Maroney by the left post.
- Surveying the landscape, Burns found Burgess in traffic four meters from the net for the goal with 13:15 remaining.
- On a woman-up chance with 11:33 left, Sandford saw Fitzpatrick in the middle, and the senior redirected the ball into the net for a 13-10 Manhattan edge.
- The two found chemistry again with 7:18 to go, extending the lead to four.
- When Sandford raced in from the right sideline and passed to her, Murphy hesitated before firing a shot into the nylon to conclude the scoring with 15 seconds until the final buzzer.
