Riverdale, NY - Manhattan senior Jose Meza (Clifton, NJ / Paramus Catholic) scored his first goal of the season, but St. Francis Brooklyn's tally in the 85th minute sealed a 2-1 win for the Terriers Saturday afternoon at Gaelic Park.
Manhattan drops to 3-3-0 on the season, while St. Francis Brooklyn improves to 5-3-0.
Neither side generated much offense in the first half, as the Terriers' back line kept the ball away from goalkeeper Roberto Bazzichetto. On the flip side, junior Connor Hayes (El Dorado Hills, CA / Oak Ridge) made five saves to keep the game scoreless.
In the 37th minute, senior Joe Hulme (Lancashire, England / St. Joseph's Roman Catholic) was issued a red card, leaving Manhattan with 10 men on the pitch the rest of the game.
Despite the numbers disadvantage, the Jaspers held their ground in the second half. After Hayes came out of the net on a challenge in the 49th minute, junior Callum Carsley (Birmingham, England / Princethorpe College) made a sliding stop in the goal to prevent a cross.
Manhattan broke the ice in the 64th minute when senior Troy Carrington (Verona, NJ / Syracuse) found Meza in the middle of the 18-yard box. Meza beat Bazzichetto left post to give the Jaspers a 1-0 edge.
Less than two minutes later, however, St. Francis Brooklyn was awarded a corner kick. The corner was sent into the box, and after a scrum, the Terriers' Leo Folla sent the ball in to level the score at one.
With less than five minutes left in regulation, St. Francis Brooklyn's Faouzi Taleb weaved through traffic 20 yards out of Manhattan's goal and fired a shot. Hayes got a piece of it, but not enough as it trickled in.
