Fairfield, CT - Fairfield took both ends of a doubleheader from Manhattan by scores of 6-4 and 6-0 at Alumni Field.
The Stags improve to 12-13 and 4-1 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 6-19 and 3-5 in the league.
Junior Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) paced the visitors on the day with three hits.
Game One
Fueled a four-run first inning, Fairfield defeated Manhattan by a 6-4 count in game one.
The Stags batted around in their first trip to the plate in notching four runs but the damage could have been worse had it not been for an impressive double play that was started by senior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan).
After stranding a pair of runners in scoring position in the third, the Jaspers got on the board in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) reached via a one-out single before senior Evan Brown (Ashburnham, MA / Bridgton Academy (ME)) crushed a two-run home run to right center in trimming the deficit to 4-2.
Fairfield immediately got those two runs back in the bottom part of the frame on Mitch Williams' two-run homer in extending the lead out to 6-2.
In the top of the eighth, Manhattan plated two more runs with an impressive two-out rally. After junior Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) singled to load the bases, Forlow was plunked before Richie Barrella (So., Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) followed with a walk in making it is a 6-4 game. Unfortunately that would be as close as the Jaspers would get.
Forlow went 2-for-3 with a RBI to pace a seven-hit attack while senior RHP Matt Simonetti (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) fired 4.0 hitless innings of relief.
Kevin Radziewicz was 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk to lead the way for the Stags while John Signore yielded two runs on five hits with four strikeouts over 7.0 innings in registering the victory.
Game Two
Gavin Wallace fired a complete game shutout while scattering three hits in leading Fairfield to a 6-0 win over Manhattan in game two.
The Stags broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the third but the damage could have been worse had it not been for a nice double play turn by Carrera.
Fairfield added to the lead with one more in the fourth and fifth innings in stretching the lead out to 6-0.
Junior LHP Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) struck out four over 5.0 innings in taking the loss while sophomore RHP Matt Jones (Haddonfield, NJ / Haddonfield Memorial) fired a scoreless inning of relief.
Michael Conti and Tyler Gambardella each had two hits to pace a nine-hit attack for the Stags.
The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a single game starting at 12:00 pm.
