New Rochelle, NY - Fueled by four unearned runs, Iona defeated Manhattan 4-1 in the series finale between the teams at City Field.
The Gaels improve to 14-16 and 7-5 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 10-27 and 5-7 in the league.
Manhattan struck first in the top of the first as senior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) led off with a single before stealing second and advancing to third on a Brendan Bisset (Jr., New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ) sacrifice. Sophomore Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) followed with a run-scoring single in staking the visitors to an early 1-0 lead.
The Jaspers would threaten in each of the next four frames only to be denied each time as Iona was aided by two double plays in keeping the deficit at one run.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Gaels took control of the game thanks to parlaying three errors and six walks into four runs.
Senior RHP Shawn Kanwisher (Washington Township, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) kept Manhattan in the game, firing 3.1 hitless innings but the Jaspers were unable to further dent the scoreboard in falling 4-1.
Carrera and senior Jason Patnick (Hopewell, NJ / Hopewell Valley) each had two hits to pace a nine-hit Manhattan attack.
Senior RHP Matt Simonetti (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, yielding four unearned runs over 4.2 ininings on one-hit ball.
Despite receiving just one run of support, Patrick Ryan earned the win, yielding one run over 7.0 innings of work.
The Jaspers return to action with a doubleheader against NYIT on Tuesday, April 25 with first pitch tabbed for 4:00 pm.
