New Rochelle, NY - Behind a virtuoso complete game performance from junior LHP Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, NY / Farrell), Manhattan defeated Iona 4-1 in game two at City Field while helping earn a doubleheader split.
The Jaspers are now 10-26 and 5-6 in the MAAC while the Gaels are 13-16 and 6-5 in the league.
Game Two
Manhattan plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning defeating Iona by a 4-1 score in game two of a doubleheader at City Field in securing a doubleheader split.
Sophomore Richie Barrella (Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) led off the decisive frame with his second infield single of the game before junior Brandon Valls (Miami, FL / Dean CC) and senior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) got aboard via errors on successful sacrifice bunts. Carrera advanced to third in reaching while Barrella and Valls scored in giving the Jaspers an insurmountable 3-1 lead. Carrera scored one batter later on a dropped pop-up in providing the final 4-1 count.
Senior Evan Brown (Asburnham, MA / Bridgton Academy (ME)) opened the scoring with his team-leading fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to right field in staking the visitors to an early 1-0 advantage.
After stranding runners in scoring position over the first two frames, the Gaels broke through in the third with a single run in tying the game up at 1-1. Fran Kinsely led off with a double down the left field line before moving to third on Sean Breen's single through the right side. Kinsely would then cross the plate on a Matt Byrne sacrifice fly.
Iona threatened to take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, placing a runner on third with one out only to be denied when Cosgrove induced a grounder back to the mound before ending the threat with a strikeout.
The Gaels would again make some noise one inning later when Joseph Lovecchio reached on a one-out, infield single. However, junior Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) would eradicate him from the bases with a perfect strike to second base in gunning Lovecchio out.
In the top of the seventh, Pena drew a leadoff walk but would be left stranded before Cosgrove set Manhattan up for the win with a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning.
Barella paced the visitors, going 2-for-3 with the game-winning run.
Cosgrove earned the win in moving to 2-5, yielding one run on six hits over 8.0 innings while striking out nine, against just one walk, while also recording 13 ground ball outs.
Junior RHP Joe DeRosa was outstanding for Iona in earning a no-decision, yielding just one run on two hits over 6.2 innings with six strikeouts, against two walks.
Game One
Iona used a pair of big innings en route to posting a 5-2 come-from-behind win over Manhattan in game one at City Park
The Jaspers opened the scoring with an unearned run in the second. Senior Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, NY / Haldane) reached via a one-out error before crossing the plate on junior Adam Genners' (Jacksonville, FL / Stanton College Prep) two-out, run-scoring single through the right side.
Meanwhile, senior RHP Joey Rocchietti (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) was in total control, retiring the first eight hitters he face while yielding just two hits with five strikeouts over the first three innings.
Manhattan added to its lead in the top of the fourth as Brown led off with a double before coming around to score on an error.
In the bottom of the frame, the Gaels tied the game up at 2-2 on Alex Scales' two-run double to left field.
Iona would then take control of the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth in opening up a 5-2 advantage.
The visitors looked to answer in the top of the seventh as junior Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) reached via an infield single before Genners notched his second hit of the game but the Jaspers were unable to get any runs back in stranding a pair.
Manhattan also threatened in each of the final two frames to no avail in falling 5-2.
Genners went 2-for-3 with a RBI to pace a seven-hit Jasper attack that saw eight different players reach safely.
Rocchietti struck out seven, against no walks, while yielding five runs on 10 hits over 6.0 innings of work in being saddle with the loss.
Fran Kinsely, Sean Breen and Niko Switalla each had two hits while Scales drove in three to lead the way for the Gaels. Bill Maier struck out eight, against one walk, while yielding two unearned runs over 8.0 innings in earning the win.
The teams will conclude their three-game series with a single game tomorrow at 12:00 pm.
