RIVERDALE, NY – Quinnipiac's Ashley Bobinski scored on a free position shot with nine seconds remaining to give the Bobcats (2-8, 1-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) a 12-11 win over the Manhattan College women's lacrosse team (3-7, 0-2 MAAC) at Gaelic Park on Saturday. The Jaspers won the ensuing draw, but Kara Hodapp's (Oak Ridge, NJ) last-second attempt from midfield was saved.
Manhattan led 11-10 when Ellie Swenson scored for the Bobcats at the 1:13 mark. Hodapp controlled the draw, and the Jaspers held for a final shot. Darby Nolan (Oak Ridge, NJ) had a good attempt from in front of the circle with 53 seconds remaining, but Quinnipiac goalkeeper Kyle Larkin made the save, setting up the Bobcats' final rush.
The Jaspers held a 9-6 lead early in the second half before back-to-back Quinnipiac goals made it a 9-8 game. Emily Englert (Somers, NY) scored to bring the margin back to two, but the Bobcats converted a pair of free position attempts to knot the score at 10-10. Molly Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, NY) then put Manhattan back in front, 11-10, with her fourth tally of the game at the 7:09 mark.
After Quinnipiac jumped out to a 3-0 lead, the Jaspers responded with three goals of their own. The Bobcats regained the lead with 10:55 remaining in the first half before Fitzpatrick scored twice to give Manhattan its first advantage, 5-4. Quinnipiac tied it again, but Emily Sandford (Floral Park, NY) found the back of the net with just over two minutes left until halftime, putting the Jaspers up 6-5 at the break. Nolan then increased that cushion to 8-5 with a pair of goals early in the second half.
Nolan had three goals to go along with Fitzpatrick's four. Sandford also tallied three points with a goal and two assists, while also collecting three ground balls. Hodapp, meanwhile, distributed two assists and added seven draw controls. Manhattan held a 17-8 advantage on draws, with Caitlin Murphy (Carmel, NY) notching six draw controls. Emma Kaishian (Yorktown, NY) picked up three ground balls, as the teams were even at 15-15 in that category. Nikki Prestiano (Yorktown Heights, NY) (3-7) made nine saves in goal.
Allison Kuhn finished with five goals and an assist for the Bobcats. Swenson contributed three goals and two draw controls, and Alex Hlesciak recorded two goals to go along with three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Kiera Kelly, meanwhile, paced Quinnipiac with a game-high four ground balls. Larkin (2-8) stopped 10 Manhattan shots in the game.
This marked the beginning of a span where the Jaspers play three out of four at Gaelic Park. Manhattan hosts Marist (4-6, 0-1 MAAC) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
