Riverdale, NY - Manhattan trimmed a five-goal deficit to one in the fourth quarter but could get no closer in dropping a 12-10 decision to Canisius in MAAC action.

The Golden Griffins improve to 4-4 and 2-0 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 2-7 and 0-2 in the league.

Manhattan started out quickly as junior Joseph Bressingham (Glen Cove, NY / Nassau CC) won the opening face-off before freshman Luke Hanson (Middletown, NY / Minisink Valley) scored just 42 seconds into the game. Junior Michael Zingaro (Cortlandt Manor, NY / Walter Panas) then snuffed out a pair of Canisius offensive threats before senior Matt Garvey (Essex Falls, NJ / West Essex) scored off a pass from classmate Alex Abiog (Saratoga, CA / Bellarmine College Prep).

After the Golden Griffins briefly answered, Abiog found Mike Lombardi (West Islip, NY / West Islip) for the Jaspers third score of the game in extending the advantage to 3-1 with 5:02 to play in the first quarter. Freshman Trevor Pelletier (Miami, FL / Gulliver Prep) then extended the lead out to 4-1 with a score off a pass from classmate Reid Martin (Buffalo, NY / Canisius).

Canisius then responded with four-straight goals to take its first lead of the game at 5-4. Pelletier answered with his second score before sophomore Parker Giarratana (Delray, FL / Boca Raton Community) reclaimed the lead for Manhattan off a pass from Lombardi in giving the Jaspers a 6-5 lead at the break.

The Golden Griffins then assumed control of the game with six goals in the third quarter in opening up an 11-6 advantage.

Down but not out, Garvey and Giarratana scored within 16 seconds of each other to trim the deficit to 11-8 with 9:17 to play in the fourth.

Garvey then scored his third goal of the game in a man-up opportunity off a CJ Scharf (Fr., West Islip, NY / West Islip) pass. Giarratana added another man-up score off a Hanson pass to cut the deficit to 11-10 with 6:18 to play.

Bressingham then won the next face-off and the Jaspers got two shots on goal only to be denied each time by Liam Ganzhorn. On the ensuing possession, Jeff Edwards capped his four-goal performance with the game-clinching score with 1:34 to play.

Garvey and Giarratana each had three goals to pace Manhattan while Pelletier had two.

Zingaro made 12 saves with Bressingham nothing seven ground balls to round out the top statistical performers.

The Jaspers return to action against Quinnipiac on Saturday, April 1 at 7:00 pm.
