Marist jumped out to an eight-point lead to start overtime before holding off a late-charging Manhattan squad by a 90-88 count at McCann Arena.


The Red Foxes improve to 5-10 and 2-2 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 5-9 and 0-3 in the league.

In defeat, junior Calvin Crawford (Middletown, NY / St. Thomas More (CT)) scored a team-high 18 points while classmate Zane Waterman (Winston Salem, NC / Fayetteville Academy) added 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Manhattan which entered the game as the MAAC leader in rebounding margin played to its strength against Marist in posting a 51-39 advantage on the glass, fueled by a 21-6 margin on the offensive end, while outscoring the Red Foxes 24-6 on second-chance points and 50-34 in the paint.

Waterman paced the frontcourt effort, grabbing six of his nine rebounds on the offensive end, which led to 11 of his 17 points.

In overtime, Marist opened the extra stanza on a 10-2 run before the Jaspers fought back. Freshman Na'Quan Council (Blackwood, NJ / Scotland Performance Institute (PA)) hit a pair at the line before senior Tyler Wilson (Bronx, NY / Cardinal Hayes) hit a jumper to trim the Red Fox lead to 84-80 with 1:39 to play.

Manhattan then held strong on each  of its next two defensive possessions but was unable to convert on the ensuing end. The lead would expand out to seven before Marist did just enough to hold off the Jaspers by the aforementioned 90-88 count.

Junior Zavier Turner (Indianapolis, IN / Ball State) added eight points, a career-high eight rebounds and six assists  while classmate Ahmed Ismail (Cairo, Egypt / Colby CC) matched his career-high with nine points.

The Red Foxes shot 48.3 percent from the floor and were paced by Khallid Hart, who finished up with 21 points, while Brian Parker added 19 points, a team-best seven rebounds and six assists.

Manhattan returns home against Fairfield on Thursday, January 5 with opening tip on ESPN3 slated for 8:00 pm.
