Game 2 Recap:
Juniors Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) and Jason Patnick (Hopewell, NJ / IMG Academy (FL)) combined to go 5-for-9 with a double, triple and six RBI to lead Manhattan to a decisive 11-6 win in the regular season finale.
All nine regulars reached base safely with eight recording hits as the Jaspers rallied from an early 3-0 deficit in securing their fourth-straight MAAC series victory.
Trailing by three runs, Carrera crushed a two-run, bases loaded single up the middle to plate Patnick and freshman Anthony Rocchietti (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) before senior Christian Santisteban (Miami, FL / Gulliver Prep) followed with a game-tying RBI single to score sophomore Adam Genners (Jacksonville, FL / Stanton College Prep).
After the visitors briefly reclaimed the lead, Manhattan took its first advantage of the game at 5-4 in the fourth inning on RBI doubles from senior Chris Reynolds (Wall, NJ / St. Rose) and Carrera.
The Jaspers added another run in the fifth as Patnick plated sophomore Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) with a two-out RBI single.
Manhattan then put the game away in the sixth inning with five runs while batting around. Patnick again delivered the big hit with a two-run triple as the Jaspers opened up an insurmountable 11-4 lead.
Iona would get two runs back but get no closer in falling 11-6.
Junior LHP Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, NJ / Red Bank Regional) earned his fourth-straight win, yielding one run with five strikeouts over 4.0 innings of one-run relief.
10 different Gael players hit safely led by Jon Budesa, who finished up with three hits.
Game 1 Recap:
Iona scored four times in the fourth en route to posting a 5-3 win over Manhattan in the opener.
The Jaspers started quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first. Carrera was plunked leading off the game before Santisteban crushed a two-run homer into the trees past right field.
After threatening over the first three frames, the Gaels broke through with four runs in the top of the fourth with Matt Byrne giving the visitors a 4-2 lead with a two-run single against a drawn-in infield.
Byrne extended the lead out to 5-2 in the sixth with a two-out, run-scoring single up the middle.
Santisteban quickly got that run back in the bottom part of the frame, crushing a towering home run to right center in trimming the deficit to 5-3.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as Manhattan would get.
Byrne finished up 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead a 10-hit Iona attack with Joe DeRosa (3-3) earning the win, yielding three runs on four hits over 6.0 innings.
Santisteban finished up 2-for-3 with two home runs and all three Jasper RBI to pace a four-hit attack and finished up the weekend with a .500 average (5-for-10) to go along with a double, two home runs and a 1.200 slugging percentage. Reynolds also celebrated the weekend in style, finishing up with a .375 average (3-for-8) while scoring a team-best five runs in reaching base at a .545 clip.
