Wappingers Falls, NY - Senior Chris Reynolds' (Wall, NJ / St. Rose) two-run, eighth-inning single propelled Manhattan to a 7-5 win over Fordham at Dutchess Stadium.
With a split of this season's series, the Jaspers improve to 13-24 and will next play at Columbia tomorrow at 4:00 pm in a game that was just added to the schedule while the Rams fall to 22-21.
Manhattan quickly opened the scoring in the first. Junior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) led off with an infield single before stealing second. Senior Christian Santisteban (Miami, FL / Gulliver Prep) then plated Carrera with a single through the right side for the first run.
The Jaspers added to the lead with a pair of second-inning runs in extending their advantage to 3-0. Sophomore Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) led off with an infield single before moving to second on an infield hit by freshman Anthony Rocchietti (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills). Sophomore Ryan Gronlier (Doral, FL / Doral Academy) followed with a RBI single to left field, plating Pfenninger. Later in the frame, freshman Richie Barrella (Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) capped the scoring with a bases loaded walk to bring around Rocchietti.
Fordham responded with three runs in tying the game up at 3-3. The Rams would then take their first lead of the game at 5-3 in the fifth on Ryan Mahoney's second two-run single of the game.
Santisteban saved a run in the top of the seventh with a shoe string grab with a runner on third for the final out before delivering the big hit in the bottom part of the frame. The Florida native smoked his 13th double to the right-center gap to plate Reynolds while slicing the lead to 5-4.
Fordham threatened to get that run back in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with two outs. Junior RHP Shawn Kanwisher (Washington Township, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) entered and put out the threat with just three pitches, coaxing an inning-ending fly out.
Manhattan completed its comeback with a big eighth-inning rally. Patnick got things started with a one-out single before moving to third on a Rocchietti single. Gronlier tied the game up at 5-5 on a single off the pitcher's glove, scoring Patnick while moving Rocchietti to third. Pinch-runner Joe Credendino (Jr., Wappingers Falls, NY / OCC) then stole second while setting the stage for Reynolds' two-run RBI single.
Kanwisher closed out the game with a relatively clean ninth inning in earning his team-leading sixth victory of the year.
Santisteban paced a 12-hit attack, finishing up 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI while Gronlier, Patnick and Rocchietti all notched a pair of hits while combining for three runs and two RBI.
Anthony DiMeglio (3-3) was the pitcher of record for the visitors, allowing three runs in an inning of relief.
