Riverdale, NY - Manhattan dropped its MAAC opener to Siena in heartbreaking fashion by a 10-9 count at Gaelic Park.
The Saints improve to 6-5 and 1-1 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 4-6 and 0-1 in the league.
Freshman Molly Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, NY / Lakeland) opened the scoring just 19 seconds into the match with a goal off a pass from senior Megan Yarusso (Brewster, NY / Brewster) in staking Manhattan to an early 1-0 lead.
After Siena answered, seniors Kaitlyn Cunningham (Spring Lake, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) and Claire Roediger (Katonah, NY / Somers) notched back-to-back goals before the Saints again battled back to tie up. Junior Sarah Lang (Golden's Bridge, NY/ Vermont) then stuck to the script with a goal while giving Manhattan a 4-3 advantage.
The visitors responded with a 3-0 spurt that spanned the end of the first and the beginning of the second halves en route to opening up a 6-4 lead.
In continuing with the game of runs theme, Fitzpatrick notched her second score and junior Darby Nolan (Oakridge, NJ / Jefferson Township) her first in tying the game at 6-6.
Siena then embarked on a 4-1 run in opening up a 10-7 lead with just 5:00 to to play but the never-say die Jaspers quickly answered just 14 seconds later when sophomore Melissa Vogelgesang (Downingtown, PA / Downingtown West) found the back of the net off a Yarusso pass.
Roediger then scored with 1:30 to play in making it a one-goal game at 10-9. The Saints then appeared to be in good shape thanks to winning the ensuing draw control only to have Roediger force a turnover with 1:06 to play.
Unfortunately that would be as close as Manhattan would get as Roediger's shot with 38 seconds to play was corralled by the Siena keeper as the visitors ran out the clock in escaping Riverdale with the victory.
Roediger paced the Jaspers with three goals while Fitzpatrick found the back of the net twice.
Manhattan returns to action against Monmouth on Wednesday, April 6 with opening draw slated for 3:00pm
