Lowell, MA – Fueled by a big fourth quarter, Manhattan defeated UMass Lowell 8-5 to give head coach Drew Kelleher his first career victory.
The Jaspers improve to 1-6 while the River Hawks fall to 1-5.
UMass Lowell jumped out to the early 2-0 lead before freshman Cole Johnson (Dexter, NY / General Brown) and junior Alex Abiog (Saratoga, CA / Bellamine College Prep) found the back of the net to tie the score.
The River Hawks would respond with a pair of goals to take a 4-2 lead into intermission.
In the second half it was all Manhattan as the Jaspers scored five unanswered goals and six of the last seven to close the victory.
In the third period, sophomore Chris Sammarro (Mountain Lakes, NY / Mountain Lakes) got things started with the first goal after intermission. Classmate Andrew Gresham (Pitt Meadows, BC / Pitt Meadows Secondary) joined the the party with a score to tie it up at 4-4.
Johnson then netted his second goal to give Manhattan the lead before a pair of sophomore Conor Darby (Havermill, MA / Proctor Academy/Assumption) goals extended the lead out to 7-4.
After UMass Lowell briefly answered with a goal, freshman Parker Giarratana (Delray, FL / Boca Raton Community) put the finishing touches on an Impressive Jasper performance with a goal with just 25 seconds to play.
Giarratana paced Manhattan with a goal and three assists.
Sophomore Michael Zingaro (Cortland Manor, NY / Walter Panas) had 13 saves and was outstanding in the net to lead the Jaspers' defensive effort.
Manhattan returns to action on Monday, March 14 against No. 10 North Carolina at Gaelic Park with opening face-off slated for 1:30 pm.
