Buffalo Hands Manhattan First Loss of Season

BUFFALO, NY – On Saturday afternoon, the Manhattan College women's basketball team played its first road game of the season at Buffalo.  Looking to go 3-0 for the first time since 2003-04, the Jaspers (2-1) instead suffered a 73-39 loss to the Bulls (3-0), the defending Mid-American Conference champions, at Alumni Arena.

Manhattan scored the first two points of the game when Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY) sank a pair of free throws 2:09 into the contest, but Buffalo's JoAnna Smith hit a trey on the other end and the Bulls never trailed again.  Buffalo led 21-9 at the end of the first quarter, and the Bulls extended the margin to 40-16 at halftime.

After Buffalo increased its advantage to 54-18 with 2:44 left in the third quarter, the Jaspers went on an 8-2 run to pull within 56-26.  KellyAnne O'Reilly (Montville, NJ) had seven points during the stretch.  The Bulls went up 73-37 late in the fourth quarter before an O'Reilly jumper capped the scoring, as Manhattan fell by a 73-39 count.

O'Reilly paced the Jaspers with nine points.  Tatum added seven points, five rebounds three assists and four steals.  Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA) finished with five rebounds, two assists and two blocks, while Taylor Williams (Windsor, CT) pulled down a team-high six boards.  Manhattan shot 30.4 percent (14-of-46) from the field, 16.7 percent (3-of-18) from downtown, and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) at the free throw line.

Gabi Bade tallied a game-high 11 points for Buffalo.  Smith contributed 10 points, while Summer Hemphill notched nine points, eight rebounds and four steals.  Theresa Onwuka added nine points and three steals for the Bulls, who outrebounded the Jaspers 48-30.  As a team, Buffalo shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the floor, 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from long range, and 71.4 percent (20-of-28) at the charity stripe.

The Jaspers hit the road again on Tuesday, when they head to Brown (2-1) for a 4 p.m. matchup.  It will be Manhattan's first time visiting the Bears since Nov. 29, 2000.

NOTES: The contest was broadcast nationally on ESPN3…This marked the first time the teams ever met in Buffalo…The Bulls have won all three meetings between the squads…Buffalo is one of two opponents on the Jaspers' 2016-17 schedule that played in last season's NCAA Tournament…Williams returned to the starting lineup after coming off the bench against Yale…Saturday's contest was the start of a stretch where Manhattan will play six out of eight on the road.
