RIVERDALE, NY – After dropping a five-set decision to Siena on Saturday, the Manhattan College volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Marist team on Sunday. The Red Foxes (5-11, 5-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) hit a combined .291 (47 kills, 13 errors, 117 attempts) in a 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 victory over the Jaspers (5-14, 2-4 MAAC) at Draddy Gymnasium.
There were 12 ties and four lead changes in a very evenly-played first set. Manhattan went up 17-15, but Marist responded with a 5-1 rally to take a 20-18 lead. After Marissa Behrens (Honolulu, HI) slammed a kill, back-to-back service aces by Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, HI) put the Jaspers in front 21-20. The Red Foxes countered with a 3-0 run of their own to go ahead 23-21 before an Ivana Kostic (Grocka, Serbia) kill again made it a one-point margin, 23-22. However, Marist's Ashton Korona slammed kills on each of the next two points to give the Red Foxes a 25-22 set win. As a team, Marist was credited with 20 kills and hit .415 (three errors, 41 attempts) in the first set.
The Jaspers built an early 4-1 lead in the second set, but Marist countered with a 4-0 rally to take a 5-4 advantage. After Manhattan went ahead 8-6, the Red Foxes used a 9-2 run to open up a 15-10 cushion. Manhattan got back within one at 15-14 before Marist extended the margin to five at 22-17. The Red Foxes took the second set by a 25-20 count to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
In the third set, Marist took a 7-2 advantage before the Jaspers rallied to take an 11-10 lead on a Milena Janjusevic (Belgrade, Serbia) kill. The Red Foxes responded with nine of the next 11 points, though, to create a six-point separation, 19-13. Manhattan again pulled within one at 22-21, but Marist claimed the next three points to take the set, 25-21, and wrap up its fourth consecutive road win over the Jaspers.
Olyvia Chaltas (Temecula, CA) led the Jaspers with nine kills, while Janjusevic recorded eight kills and 10 digs. Behrens and Kostic added seven kills apiece. Yamashiro had a team-high 15 digs to go along with three service aces, and Sandra Lozanova (Pernik, Bulgaria) tallied 10 digs. Zoe Lindsey (McHenry, IL), meanwhile, distributed 33 assists for Manhattan, with hit .134 (34-19-112) as a team.
For the Red Foxes, Megan Fergus finished with 13 kills on .480 hitting to go along with four blocks. Mackenzie O'Brien also had 13 kills, while Korona tallied 10 kills and five blocks. Kelsey Ediger contributed seven kills and a match-high 16 digs. Lexi Millington, meanwhile, posted 14 digs and four aces. Taylor van der Biezen handed out 22 assists and Sydney Rojek dished out 16 assists for Marist. The Red Foxes outdug the Jaspers 56-47 and held a 10-3 advantage in blocking.
Manhattan, which concluded a three-match homestand on Sunday, will play four of its next five contests on the road. The Jaspers begin the string on Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Canisius (3-12, 1-5 MAAC) that can be seen live on ESPN3.
