RIVERDALE, NY – In its first home meet of the season, the Manhattan College men's swimming & diving team posted an exciting 147-115 victory over Fairfield at the Ethical & Cultural Fieldston School on Friday evening. The women's squad, meanwhile, suffered a 145-116 loss to the Stags.
“Tonight's effort by the men was outstanding,” Head Coach Joe Murtha said. “They were fired up right from the start, and they never looked back. It was one of the most exciting meets I have been a part of since I started here over seven years ago. I couldn't be prouder of what the men accomplished!”
Manhattan set the tone for the night right away, taking first and third in the opening event—the 400 yard medley relay. The Jaspers then ended the meet with a victory in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
Individually, Rich Llewellyn (East Islip, NY) led the way with a pair of first-place finishes. He won both the 200 yard freestyle (1:48.72) and 100 yard butterfly (52.66), one of two events where the Jaspers swept the top three positions. Matthew Silvestri (Howell, NJ) and Mike DiMaria (East Huntington, NY) took second (56.07) and third (57.58) in the 100 butterfly, while Manhattan also went 1-2-3 in the 50 yard freestyle. Neil Perry (Elkridge, MD) was first in 22.04 seconds, followed by Christopher Reyes (Queens, NY) (22.42) and Peter Hubbell (Cold Spring Harbor, NY) (22.60).
Timothy Valentine (Massapequa, NY) took first in both the 100 (59.77) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:14.27), and he was fourth in the 200 yard individual medley (2:07.97). Tyler Dalton (East Stroudsburg, PA), meanwhile, placed third in all three events. Tyler McCloskey (Orangeburg, NY) finished third in the 200 individual medley, and Will Kulp (New Fairfield, CT) secured fourth place in both breaststroke events.
On the women's side, Alexandra Hutzler (Miller Place, NY) recorded a pair of wins in the 200 individual medley (2:18.35) and 100 yard backstroke (1:02.56). Carolyn Crocker (Broad Channel, NY) and Yvonne Corcoran (West Boylston, MA), meanwhile, had 1-2 finishes in both the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle.
Kali Nembach (Lynbrook, NY) turned in three second-place finishes in the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyles. Klaudia Nagrabska (Belmont, MA) was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.56), and Eileen Blood (Bridgewater, NJ) added a second-place showing in the 200 yard backstroke (2:21.25). In addition, Cassandra Rubino (Thiells, NY) placed third in the 200 yard butterfly (2:23.62).
“The women put up one heck of a fight tonight, really rising to the occasion,” Murtha said. “The team effort was incredible and the general atmosphere, both on the deck and in the pool, was amazing. I'm really proud of the women, and I think we are all excited for what the rest of the season has in store.”
Next Saturday, the Jaspers return to action with a 1 p.m. dual meet against Marywood at the Ethical & Cultural Fieldston School.
