RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's lacrosse team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) bout to Canisius under snowy conditions at Gaelic Park on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins scored seven goals in the opening stanza en route to earning a 10-1 victory.
With the win, Canisius improves to 5-5 overall and remains undefeated in conference play at 2-0. The Jaspers move to 2-8, including an 0-2 mark in MAAC contests.
After a relatively quiet opening 15 minutes of play, the Golden Griffins offense erupted for seven consecutive goals in a 12-minute span toward the latter stages of the first half.
Canisius continued the run in the second half to extend the lead to as many as nine, at 9-0, before the Jaspers struck with 12:13 to play in the game. Senior Carly Cappello (New City, N.Y. / Albertus Magnus) slotted one to the right of Golden Griffins' senior goalkeeper Kayla Scully to put Manhattan on the board. Junior co-captain Kaitlyn Cunningham (Spring Lake, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) was credited with an assist for providing a great feed to the streaking Cappello.
Defensively, Manhattan senior goalkeeper and co-captain Christina Fiorinelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) played very well. She recorded 13 saves and a team-high four ground balls in the outing. Senior defender and co-captain Caitlin Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y. / Mahopac) caused a team best two turnovers.
Canisius senior Tori Quinn registered a game-high five points (2G, 3A).
The Jaspers will return to action on Wednesday, April 1, when they travel to Albany to take on Siena in MAAC competition. The opening draw control is scheduled for 3 p.m.
