Riverdale, NY - On a rain-soaked field at Gaelic Park, Manhattan concluded the regular season with a resounding 5-1 win over Iona while clinching the No. 2 seed and a bye in the upcoming MAAC Championships.
The Jaspers will next play the highest remaining seed in the MAAC semifinals at the Great Lawn on the campus of Monmouth University on Friday, November 6 at a time to be determined.
With the victory, Manhattan improves to 10-4-3 and 6-1-3 in the MAAC while recording double-digits in wins for just the third time in the 25 year history of the program and the first time since notching a program record 12 in 2006.
In the triumph, senior goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny (Lagrangeville, NY / Arlington) set the Jasper school record for wins in a season (9) and career (23). The Gaels, meanwhile, end their season at 3-16 and 2-8 in the league.
In today's match, Manhattan dominated the action on offense in posting a decisive 20-4 advantage on shots on goal with nine different student-athletes recording points.
In the opening stanza, senior Emily Ude (Babylon, NY / North Babylon) opened the scoring with a header off a 20-yard cross from classmate Sam Washuk (Milford, CT / Joseph A. Foran) in the 12th minute. In the 20th minute, junior Jenny Bitzer (Messstetten, Germany / Louisiana Tech) pushed the advantage out to 2-0 when with a header of her own off a Colleen Kavanagh (Sr., Rockville Centre, NY / Sacred Heart Academy) corner kick.
Following intermission, Iona trimmed the deficit to 2-1 only to see the Jaspers explode for three goals over the final 15 minutes.
Junior Erica Modena (Massapequa, NY / Massapequa) blasted in her team-leading 11th score off a pass from Victoria Reis (Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) to answer the Gael score in the 76th minute.
In the 80th minute, freshman Caroline Taylor (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock) got into the act with her first collegiate tally before junior Tara Teal (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem) capped the scoring in the 90th minute off a pass from freshman Emma Saul (Orchard Park, NY / Orchard Park).
Kim Marra led the way for Iona with her third marker of the season.
