RIVERDALE, N.Y. – In front of a season-high 1,017 fans on “Kid's Day Out” at Draddy Gymnasium, the Manhattan College women's basketball team (2-13, 1-5 MAAC) dropped a 67-45 decision to nine-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champion Marist (9-6, 5-1 MAAC) on Monday. Shayna Ericksen (Long Valley, N.J.) had her second straight double-double for the Jaspers, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
After Marist jumped out to an 8-2 lead, the Jaspers responded with a 13-6 rally, pulling within one at 14-13 on a Blake Underhill (Edgewater, N.J.) jumper with 8:33 left before halftime. However, the Red Foxes countered with 15 straight points to open up a 29-13 advantage at the 4:17 mark. Manhattan halted Marist's run on an Alex Cohen (Nashua, N.H.) three-pointer, and the teams went into the locker room with the Red Foxes leading 33-20.
Nyasha Irizarry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) drained a trey to open the second-half scoring, but Tori Jarosz followed with back-to-back layups for Marist, as the Red Foxes extended their lead to as many as 27 points. Mikki Guiton (Schwenksville, Pa.) got an offensive rebound and put back with 33 seconds remaining, and Irizarry sank a three-pointer with 13 seconds left to cut the final margin to 22 points, 67-45.
Eight of Ericksen's 10 rebounds came on the offensive glass, as Manhattan pulled down 20 offensive boards total. She also had three steals. Kayla Grimme (Altoona, Pa.) recorded nine points and five rebounds to go along with a career-high five blocks, while Taylor Williams (Windsor, Conn.) contributed six rebounds. Underhill distributed four assists. The Jaspers shot 26.1 percent (18-of-69) from the field, 25 percent (4-of-16) from three-point range, and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) at the free throw line.
Madeline Blais tallied a game-high 24 points for the Red Foxes, while Jarosz had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. She added three blocks. Brittni Lai dished out eight assists and Natalie Gomez-Martinez had four assists, as Marist finished with 21 assists compared to just 14 turnovers. The Red Foxes outrebounded the Jaspers 44-36 and shot 50.9 percent (28-of-55) from the floor. Marist went 8-for-18 (44.4 percent) from downtown and 3-for-6 (50 percent) at the charity stripe.
Manhattan concludes its school-record eight-game homestand with a 7 p.m. matchup against Monmouth (6-9, 2-4 MAAC) on Friday. The Jaspers and Hawks split the season series in 2013-14, with each squad winning at home.
NOTES: The Jaspers hosted “Kid's Day Out” for the fifth consecutive year, with students from Community School 300, Lighthouse Charter School, PS 93, PS 107 and PS 279 in attendance…The winners of an essay contest were given t-shirts on-court at halftime…Marist has won 40 of its last 42 MAAC road games, with the only two losses coming at Draddy Gymnasium (2010, 2012)…The Red Foxes have won six straight against Manhattan and lead the all-time series 26-23…Manhattan used its 11th different starting lineup of the season, changing the starting five for the first time in four games…It was Ericksen's fifth double-double of the season, and the 11th of her career…She also had back-to-back doubles against Fairleigh Dickinson (Nov. 14) and Holy Cross (Nov. 16) in the first two games of the season…Grimme's previous career-high was four blocks against Delaware State on Nov. 26, 2013…The last Jasper to record five blocks in a game was Nadia Peters at Canisius on Jan. 28, 2011…There were just 17 fouls called in the contest, and the game time was 1:30.
