RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team played Niagara to a 1-1 draw at Gaelic Park on Sunday. The match marked each squad's first in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. With the tie, the Jaspers move to 5-3-1 on the season.
Manhattan opened the scoring with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The Jaspers swung a ball into the box that deflected off Niagara senior wingback Haillie Price's hand. Manhattan was awarded a penalty kick, which leading scorer Aislinn McIlvenny stepped up to. The senior slotted the ball inside the right netting, beating Niagara junior goalkeeper Claire Feiertag to give the Jaspers a 1-0 lead. The goal marked McIlvenny's seventh of the fall.
Just after the halftime break, in the 52nd minute, Niagara leveled the score at one. The Purple Eagles were given a free kick left of goal from about 40 yards out. Senior Danielle Kennedy played a ball into the box that the Jaspers were unable to clear. The ball came to the feet of senior Kiley Titus, who kicked it inside far post to knot the score at one apiece.
Neither team would score the rest of the way, but Niagara held the edge in possession and chances for much of the second half and two overtime periods. Manhattan junior starting goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny made eight saves in the contest.
The Jaspers will next play on Saturday, Sept. 27, when they host the Marist Red Foxes for a 1 p.m. match at Gaelic Park. Marist will enter the contest at 1-5-1 on the year, including an 0-0-1 record in MAAC play after drawing with Rider on Sunday.
