RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Jaspers dropped their first home Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest to the Siena Saints by a 12-7 final on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 2-8 on the season, including 0-2 in conference play.
Siena used a 4-0 run toward the latter stages of the second half to extend their 8-6 lead to 12-6.
Erin Mossop scored her second of two consecutive goals with 6:49 to play to give the Saints a 10-6 lead. Manhattan junior defender Caitlin Hynes was issued a yellow card on the play. Alyssa Treanor scored on the ensuing Siena extra man opportunity to make the score 11-6 with 5:26 to play. One goal from each team over the last five minutes would leave the final score at 12-7.
Manhattan held the lead on two separate occasions. Junior Donna Jo DiNorcia scored the game's first goal on a free position shot just :28 in to give the Jaspers an early advantage. Following two tallies by Sarah Croutier to give Siena a 2-1 edge, Manhattan senior Carly Eskenazi bounced one past Siena goalkeeper Samantha DePasquale to knot the game at two. Senior Clare Kerrisk put the Jaspers up 3-2 when she netted 5:38 later. Siena ended the first half on a 3-1 run to take a 5-4 advantage into the break.
Erin Mossop had a game-high five points (3G, 2A) for Siena on the afternoon. Sarah Croutier and Alyssa Treanor also recorded hat tricks for the Saints.
The Jaspers offense was much more balanced, with the seven goals coming from six different players. DiNorcia, Eskenazi, Kerrisk, senior Brianna Rickert and junior Domenica O'Brey scored one goal apiece for Manhattan. Sophomore Megan Yarusso led the Jaspers with two scores on the day.
Defensively, Kerrisk led the team with four ground balls. Hynes collected two ground balls and caused a turnover in the contest. Junior starting goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli made nine stops for Manhattan in cage.
The Jaspers return to action on Saturday when they host the Fairfield Stags in a MAAC contest at Gaelic Park. The opening draw is set for 7 p.m.
