RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Jaspers dropped a nonconference contest to the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens 10-5 at Gaelic Park on Tuesday afternoon. With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 2-8 on the year.
After Manhattan scored the final three goals of the third quarter to get back in the game and make the score 7-5 Delaware, the Fightin' Blue Hens defense held strong in the last stanza, holding Manhattan scoreless over the final 15 minutes of play.
In the fourth quarter, Charles Schreck and Paul Major each scored their first goals of the game for Delaware. Brian Kormondy netted his second of the afternoon to give the Fightin' Blue Hens a 10-5 advantage, leaving the Jaspers unable to get any closer.
For Manhattan, four players accounted for the five goals. Junior Andrew Hurst recorded two goals and an assist on the day. Seniors Brett Madarasz and Pat Hodapp and junior Marcel Godino also scored in the game.
Senior long pole Sean McMahon led the defensive front, collecting seven ground balls and causing four turnovers, both of which were team highs. Senior starting goalkeeper Rich Akapnitis had a strong showing in cage, making 13 saves while allowing nine goals for a 54.1 save percentage.
Following today's brief return to Gaelic Park, the Jaspers will head back on the road for two games before concluding their season with three home contests. Manhattan next plays at noon on Saturday, April 5, when the team travels to Buffalo, N.Y., to take on the Canisius Golden Griffs in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action.
