Men's Lacrosse Falls to Tar Heels in Chapel Hill

Box Score

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Manhattan Jaspers fell to the No. 2 ranked team in the country, the North Carolina Tar Heels, 21-5 at the Navy Field Turf on Sunday afternoon.

The game, originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, was pushed back to a noon start on Sunday due to poor weather on the East Coast.

Junior Andrew Hurst led the Jaspers on attack, scoring his first two goals of the season. Levi Radbourne and Stephen Farrell, who took a team-high six shots, also tallied in the game. Senior Sean McMahon picked up two assists and found the back of the cage for his first goal of the season. McMahon and goalkeeper Rich Akapnitis collected a team-high five ground balls apiece. Brett Johnson put in a feisty effort at the faceoff X, winning nine draws of the 20 he took.

The Tar Heels, known for their potent offense, scored the game's first four goals and never looked back.

North Carolina had 12 different players score goals on the day, including hat tricks from Joey Sankey, Chad Tutton and Shane Simpson. Manhattan's starting goalkeeper, Akapnitis, stopped 17 shots, doing all he could to keep the Tar Heels attack at bay.

Walker Chafee, Pat Foster and Peyton Klawinski notched two goals each for North Carolina in the contest. The Tar Heels have scored an even 40 goals over their first two games of the 2014 campaign.

"This North Carolina team was no doubt a talented group and making mistakes against them can be disastrous," Jaspers head coach Steve Manitta said. "We will correct those mistakes and be a better team moving forward." Manitta also noted that Manhattan did some good things in the game. "Sean (McMahon) played very well, scoring a goal and assisting on two others. Andrew Hurst created opportunities for teammates and Richie (Akapnitis) made several fantastic stops," said Manitta.

The Jaspers bounce back into action on Saturday, Feb. 22, when they head to Fairfield for a meeting with the Stags at 1 p.m.
