POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon, the Manhattan College volleyball team did something that hadn't happened in more than a year.  The Jaspers went into Marist's McCann Arena and left with a victory.  Manhattan (16-11, 9-5 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) notched a 25-20, 26-24, 25-21 triumph to hand the first-place Red Foxes (20-4, 12-2 MAAC) only their second MAAC loss of the season and snap Marist's 15-match home winning streak.

The sides traded points early in the first set until the Jaspers went on a 5-0 rally to turn an 8-8 deadlock into a 13-8 advantage.  Marist responded with six of the next eight points to get within one before a Claire Van Dyk (New Richmond, Wis.) kill and an Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii) service ace made it 17-14 in favor of Manhattan.  After the Red Foxes again cut the margin to one at 18-17, Van Dyk pounded a kill to start a 6-0 run that brought Manhattan to set point.  McGuinness slammed a kill to finish off a 25-20 win in a set that saw the Jaspers hit a combined .310 (16 kills, three errors, 42 attempts).

In the second set, there were 17 ties and four lead changes.  Neither team was able to build a two-point advantage until consecutive kills by Van Dyk and Clare Bozzo (Salinas, Calif.) gave the Jaspers a 12-10 edge.  Marist took its first two-point lead at 21-19 before Manhattan rallied for the next two points to force a 21-21 deadlock.  It would be tied again at 22-22, but the Red Foxes claimed the next two points to earn a set point chance.  Manhattan got kills from Marissa Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii) to tie the score, then earned a set point of its own on a kill by Van Dyk.  The second set ended the same way as the first, with McGuinness pounding a kill to seal the Jaspers' 26-24 win.

Three consecutive Manhattan blocks put the Jaspers in front 4-2 in the third set, and the margin eventually reached four points at 7-3.  Marist climbed all the way back, though, tying the score at 15-15 on back-to-back aces by Amanda Schlegel.  The Jaspers countered with four straight points to go up 19-15, but the Red Foxes responded with five of the next seven, cutting the lead to one, 21-20, and prompting a Manhattan timeout.  McGuinness smashed a kill out of the timeout to start a match-ending 4-1 Jasper rally.  Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) ripped a kill to give Manhattan a match point, when she was credited with another one.  The Jaspers took the third set 25-21 to complete the sweep.

It was Marist's first loss at McCann Arena since Fairfield beat the Red Foxes 3-1 on Oct. 19, 2013.  The Jaspers, who've now won at Marist two years in a row, are the only other team to beat the Red Foxes in Poughkeepsie since the start of last season.

Van Dyk and McGuinness tallied 16 kills apiece for the Jaspers.  Van Dyk made just two errors and hit .424 in the match, while also recording 14 digs to complete a double-double.  McGuinness had a double-double, as well.  She collected 11 digs.  Volovski, meanwhile, hit .381, smashing nine kills and committing just one error in 21 attempts.  Jade Gray (Boise, Idaho) posted 35 assists and 13 digs, while Yamashiro finished with a match-high 17 digs, as the Jaspers outdug the Red Foxes 65-55.  Manhattan also held a 7-0 advantage in blocks, with Behrens contributing four stuffs.  The Jaspers hit .287 (50-13-129) as a team.

Mackenzie Stephens led the Red Foxes with 13 kills on .435 hitting.  Courtney Shaw added 11 kills, while Marisa Gilbert hit .462.  Schlegel finished with 36 assists and 13 digs, and Brooke Zywick tallied 10 digs for Marist.  As a team, the Red Foxes hit .192 (41-16-130) in the match.

Manhattan ended the season with an 8-5 road record, including an impressive 6-3 mark in MAAC play.  The Jaspers play their final four matches of the regular season at home, starting with a 7 p.m. showdown against Rider (16-11, 9-4 MAAC) on Wednesday.  The Broncs won in five sets at Draddy Gymnasium last season and posted another 3-2 victory over the Jaspers on Oct. 4.
