RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Monmouth defeated Manhattan 2-1 in an overtime thriller at Gaelic Park on Erica Murphy's game-winning goal with 24 seconds remaining in the first period of extra time.

The loss spoiled a fantastic performance by Kristen Skonieczny (Lagrangeville, N.Y. / Arlington) as the junior goalkeeper made a season-high 12 saves while also deflecting several other crossing attempts.

With the win, the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Champion Hawks improve to 9-4-0 and 4-1-0 in the league with their third-straight victory. Meanwhile, the Jaspers fall to 6-5-1 and 1-2-1 in the MAAC.

Manhattan struck first in the game's 30th minute as senior Aislinn McIlvenny (Pleasant Valley, N.Y. / Arlington) drew a pair of Monmouth defenders before dumping the ball off to a wide open Sam Washuk (Jr., Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran), who promtly fired the ball past the Hawk goalkeeper into the left corner of the net.

The Jaspers assumed the 1-0 halftime lead despite being outshot 18-3, including 6-2 on goal in the opening stanza.

After halftime, Monmouth continued to press before breaking through in the 63rd minute as Alexa Freguletti converted a header off a pass from Julie Spracklin to tie the match at 1-1.

Skonieczny then punched a cross in the front of the net in the game's 73rd minute to preserve the tie. Junior Colleen Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Academy) had a chance to reclaim the lead for Manhattan in the 88th minutes only to be denied by Hawk goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino, in what would prove to be the final major scoring threat of regulation.

In overtime, the Jaspers threatened immediately as freshman Emily Center's (Altamont, N.Y. / Guilderland) header attempt in the second minute of extra time got past the goalie but was cleared off the line by the Monmouth's Kim Clemmer.

The Hawks would continue to press and delivered the game-winner in the 100th minute..

Spracklin led Monmouth with a pair of assists as the visitors outshot Manhattan by a 32-7 count, including 14-5 in shots on goal, while owning a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.

In defeat, Washuk recorded her third goal as McIlvenny notched her second assist and has now had a hand in 10 of the 13 Jasper goals on the year.

Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, October 11 against Siena with opening kickoff slated for 1:00 pm.
