BUFFALO, N.Y. - Manhattan dropped a 3-0 decision to Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Demske Sports Complex.
With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 7-8-2 and 2-5-2 (8 points) in the MAAC and are now eliminated from playoff contention. The Golden Griffins, meanwhile, improve to 6-13 and 5-5 (15 points) in the league while clinching a berth in the six-team 2015 MAAC Championships.
Canisius struck first in the game's 17th minute when Mallory Illsley booted in Samantha Gagliano's pass from the right side. The Golden Griffins added to the lead just under five minutes later as Illsley found Kathleen Lawver to make it 2-0. Sabrina Fitzgerald then capped the first-half scoring in the 27th minute with the third Canisius goal in just under 10 minutes..
Manhattan was mostly silent in the second half until sophomore Lizzy Carlson (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) continued her fine play of late with a pair of shots. Senior Aislinn McIlvenny (Pleasant Valley, N.Y. / Arlington) then had her second shot of the match blocked in the 82nd minute before junior Tiffanie McIntosh (Groten, N.Y. / Lansing) was denied one minute later. The Jaspers wouldn't record another shot in falling by the aforementioned 3-0 score.
The Golden Griffins outshot Manhattan by a 13-11 count, including 7-5 on goal, while possessing a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Junior Kristen Skonieczny (Lagrangeville, N.Y. / Arlington) made four saves in defeat as the Jaspers will look to end their season on a high note on Wednesday, Oct. 29 when Manhattan makes the trek to Saint Peter's. Opening kickoff is tabbed for 3 p.m.
