BUFFALO, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Manhattan College volleyball team (14-9, 7-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) saw its six-match winning streak come to an end with a 28-26, 16-25, 25-16, 27-25 loss to Canisius (6-14, 6-5 MAAC) at the Koessler Athletic Center. Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii) recorded her 1,000th career dig in the match, becoming the second Jasper this season to reach that milestone.
With a team-high 19 digs, Yamashiro now has 1,007 career digs. Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii), who notched her 1,000th dig at Fairfield on Sept. 21, added 12 digs to go along with a match-high 24 kills. Claire Van Dyk (New Richmond, Wis.) also had a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs, while Jade Gray (Boise, Idaho) tallied 52 assists and 14 digs. Clare Bozzo (Salinas, Calif.) contributed five blocks for the Jaspers, who hit .199 (59 kills, 25 errors, 171 attempts) as a team.
For the Griffs, Rachel Kline registered 14 kills and 17 digs. Jacklyn Malusa added 13 kills, while Lauren Siebert and Katlyn Tyler tallied 12 kills apiece. Siebert also had six blocks and Tyler recorded five blocks. Grace Streicher had a double-double with 45 assists and 10 digs, and Emily Litwin collected a match-high 22 digs. The Griffs outdug the Jaspers 72-70 and held a 12-7 advantage in blocks. As a team, Canisius hit .193 (57-26-161) in the match.
There were 19 ties and nine lead changes in a back-and-forth first set. The scored the first three points of the match before Canisius rallied to tie the score at 4-4. Neither side was able to open up a lead of more than two points until McGuinness slammed two kills and added a service ace to turn a 20-19 deficit into a 22-20 advantage. The Griffs responded with four of the next five points to reach set point at 24-23. Manhattan scored the next two points to earn a set point opportunity of its own, but Canisius claimed the next two to regain the lead, 26-25. After Marissa Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) pounded a kill to keep the Jaspers alive, Canisius got kills from Siebert and Tyler to capture the set, 28-26.
Canisius scored the first point of the second set before Manhattan responded with a 5-0 run. The Griffs pulled within two at 8-6, but the Jaspers eventually extended their lead to six points at 15-9. After Canisius trimmed its deficit to four at 17-13, a Gray kill started a 5-1 run that pushed Manhattan's advantage to eight points, 22-14. Manhattan hit .316 (15-3-38) as a team in a 25-16 set win that evened the match at one set apiece.
The Griffs jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set and led 8-1 before the Jaspers went on a 7-3 run to cut the margin to three points, 11-8. However, Canisius scored the next seven points to open up an 18-8 advantage. Canisius ended up taking the set by a 25-16 margin, slamming 14 kills and hitting .357 (four errors, 28 attempts) in the frame.
After the Griffs went up 10-7 in the fourth set, McGuinness smashed a pair of kills and teamed with Bozzo for a block to knot the score at 10-10. The Griffs eventually opened up a 19-15 lead before three straight McGuinness kills brought Manhattan back within one, 19-18. Canisius responded with a 5-1 run to reach match point, but a kill by McGuinness started a 5-0 run that pulled the Jaspers even at 24-24. Manhattan got a kill from Van Dyk to fight off another match point and make it 25-25. Kline responded with a pair of kills, though, as, on its sixth opportunity, Canisius closed out the set, 27-25, and the match, 3-1.
Manhattan continues its Western New York swing with a 1 p.m. matchup at Niagara (10-12, 6-5 MAAC) on Sunday. The Jaspers posted a 3-1 victory over the Purple Eagles at Draddy Gymnasium on Oct. 11.
