NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Manhattan College women's soccer team (6-4-1, 1-1-1 MAAC) dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game for the first time this season on Wednesday afternoon, falling 1-0 to Iona (5-6-2, 1-1-1 MAAC) at Mazzella Field.
Iona scored the only goal of the game in the waning seconds of the first half. After the Gaels earned a corner kick in the 45th minute, Marisa Bentley fired a shot that was saved by Kristen Skonieczny (Lagrangeville, N.Y.). However, Emily Hansen corralled the rebound and passed to Erika Flowers, who slid one past Skonieczny with one second to go before the halftime whistle.
After Manhattan had a couple early chances in the second half, the Jasper defense came up big when Bentley's shot in the 75th minute was cleared off the goal line. Colleen Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) then had a pair of shots saved by Iona keeper Morgan McBrier in the 79th minute. Kavanagh was stopped by McBrier again in the 88th minute, as Iona secured the 1-0 victory.
The Gaels outshot the Jaspers 22-9, and Skonieczny (6-4-1) made seven saves in the loss. McBrier (2-2-1) made five saves for Iona, which recorded its third shutout of the season.
The Jaspers now have a week off before returning to action. Manhattan hosts defending MAAC champion Monmouth (6-4-0, 1-1-1 MAAC) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
