STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Manhattan scored first, the third goal in three games by freshman Erica Modena, but was unable to strike again as Wagner handed the Jaspers a 2-1 defeat on Hameline Field on a crisp fall afternoon.
The Jaspers went ahead 1-0 just 8:20 into the match. Modena gathered a long ball, beat her defender and slotted one past Wagner goalkeeper Katie Marcy, to continue her scoring streak.
Wagner countered quickly, allowing just 37 seconds to pass before it tied the game at 1-1. Siara Kolpon collected a feed from Sydney McNutt and knocked one in from five yards out to even the score. The Jaspers did control possession for the majority of the first half, forcing Marcy to make six saves to keep the score tied at 1-1 going to intermission.
Five and a half minutes into the second half, Wagner controlled the ball deep in the Jaspers' end. After a series of headers around the Manhattan net, Wagner's Megan Fritz settled the ball and fired one into the lower left corner to put the Seahawks in front, 2-1.
Neither team had a strong chance until the 78th minute when the officials whistled Wagner for a foul in the box. Manhattan's Kaelyn Angelo stepped up to take the penalty kick and narrowly missed evening the score, as her shot had Marcy going the wrong way but the ball glanced off the far post and back into play.
Manhattan goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny made four saves for the Jaspers, while Marcy stopped nine shots for Wagner.
After two straight road matches, the Jaspers return home on Monday, September 16 against Delaware State. Game time at Gaelic Park is 3 p.m.
