RIVERDALE, N.Y. - On a warm, late summer evening at Gaelic Park, Binghamton's Michele Galvin broke through for the lone tally of the match as the Bearcats hung on for its first victory of the season, a 1-0 win over Manhattan on Friday.
Most of the first half was played in the middle third of the field, although Binghamton held a 13-7 advantage in shots during the half.
With seven minutes left in the half, Manhattan had its best chance, when Kaelyn Angelo fired a low shot to the right of Binghamton goalkeeper Carrie Martin. Martin made a nice save on the hard shot but allowed Manhattan a corner opportunity. When Mary Hijazi's shot went wide after the corner, Binghamton countered.
Fresh off the bench, Stephani Church found Galvin to the left of the goal from about 10 yards out. Galvin settled the cross and fired one into the back of the net to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead.
The Jaspers had more opportunities in the second half but were unable to tie the score. One of Manhattan's best chances came with less than 10 minutes remaining. Sam Washuk took a free kick from near the Manhattan bench, nearly 40 yards away. Her pinpoint shot curved toward the crossbar but Martin jumped to knock it aside. Manhattan had two more corner kicks in the final 10 minutes but the Binghamton defense held strong to clinch the win.
Manhattan keeper Kristen Skonieczny made six saves in goal while Martin had three saves in the shutout.
The Jaspers are back in action on Tuesday, September 3 when they will travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross. Game time is 6 p.m.
