Men's Lacrosse Falls 16-7 at The Mount

Box Score

EMMITSBURG, Md. - A defensive first half saw the Manhattan Men's Lacrosse team trail 5-2 at Mount St. Mary's, but the Mount used two five goal runs in the second half to earn a 16-7 victory on Saturday afternoon. Manhattan (1-4) has now dropped two in a row, both coming on the road.

The Jaspers began the game on the right note as Patrick Hodapp scored three minutes in off a feed from Dan McGreevy. However, the Mount (3-4) would respond with four straight goals, holding Manhattan scoreless for over 22 minutes of game time. Cody Lehrer started the stretch with an assist from Andrew Scalley, before Scalley tallied two of his own giving his squad a 3-1 lead with 13:42 to play in the second quarter.

Eric Ososki added another tally to make it a three goal game before Paul Moreau got the Jaspers back on the board at the 4:28 mark of the second. Another Lehrer score with 48 seconds left until halftime gave the Mount a 5-2 lead heading into the break.

Manhattan responded well out of the locker room, scoring a man-up goal when Ryan Payton found Andrew Hurst for the first score of the half. McGreevy then added to his point total with an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 5-4 with 8:24 remaining in the third. Mount St. Mary's would score the next five in a row, three from Scalley, while holding Manhattan scoreless for more than eight minutes to extend their advantage to 10-4. Helping in the cause were four Jasper penalties as the Mount scored three of goals on the extra-man.

Tyler Jarvis ended the drought with one second to play in the third, making it a five goal game heading into the fourth.

Another five goal spurt by the Mount would end any hopes of a comeback as Scalley finished the day with six goals, including the first of the fourth quarter. Trailing 15-5 with fewer than six minutes to play, Moreau scored his second goal of the game for the Jaspers. Mark Hojnoski added the final tally for the Mount with 2:15 to play before Brian McGrath netted an unassisted goal with 1:10 remaining for the final goal of the game.

Both offenses peppered the net throughout as Manhattan was outshot 46-37, while the two defenses played solid as well. The Mount forced 14 turnovers, committing 11 of their own and picked up 29 ground balls to the Jaspers' 17. Meanwhile, Manhattan held Mount St. Mary's to just 12 of 19 on clear attempts and only failed on two of their 14 tries.

Adam Borgogelli made 12 saves in net, playing less than 55 minutes in the cage before Will Rego made one save in the final five minutes for the Mount. Michael Wiatrak stopped nine shots on the day for Manhattan.

The Jaspers return to action on Tue., March 12 when they travel to Princeton, N.J. for a 7 p.m. game with #12 Princeton.
