WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth entered Wednesday's women's soccer match with Manhattan having won eight of its first nine matches, all five matches at home and carried a number-seven ranking in the region. The Hawks showed why their strong start to the season is legitimate in a 6-0 victory over the Jaspers on an unseasonably warm fall evening.
Monmouth struck first in the fifth minute, when Monique Plescia tapped home a rebound after an Alexis McTamney shot.
Julie Spracklin scored in the 12th minute to make it 2-0 Monmouth and five minutes later, Dana Costello connected with McTamney for the Hawks' third goal.
Manhattan's Tara Teal had a shot on goal that was saved by Monmouth goalkeeper Ashley Lewis and Erica Modena fired one wide three minutes later. On the ensuing counterattack, Plescia and McTamney connected for the second time in the half to put Monmouth in front, 4-0.
Three minutes into the second half, McTamney tallied an unassisted goal, her seventh of the season. In the 71st minute, Alexa Freguletti headed home Dana Costello's corner kick to close the scoring in the match.
Maria Sanzari stopped eight shots in goal for the Jaspers while Lewis and Jocelyn McCoy combined for the Hawks' shutout in goal.
Manhattan is back in action on Saturday, October 5 at 1 p.m. when the Jaspers will host Canisius. The match is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Day. As part of the awareness effort, the Jaspers will sport pink apparel and donations to support the Breast Cancer Foundation will be collected at the entrance to Gaelic Park.
