Women Defeat St. Francis Brooklyn, Men Earn Split in Meet at NJIT

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - In their season opening meet, the Manhattan swim teams earned a split with Fairfield as the men defeated the Stags 158.5-103.5 while the women fell 160-101. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest took place on Friday afternoon at Riverdale Country Day School.

The Jasper men saw their depth pay immediate dividends, winning eight of 14 total events. Mike Mackay earned three top finishes on the day while Lance NeuendorfRyan KlagesDallan Treanor and freshman Rich Llewellyn were double winners for Manhattan. Things started off quickly for the men as the team of Neuendorf, Mackay, Treanor and Mike DiMaria came out victorious in the 200 Medley Relay.

Llewellyn later added to his day with a win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.14 seconds. In the next event, Treanor finished the 100 backstroke in 54.65 seconds while Neuendorf and Scott Isaacs placed second and third. Mackay earned two more wins in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke while Klages won the 50 freestyle and Neuendorf finished first in the 200 back.

Manhattan ended the meet with a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Llewellyn, Klages, Isaacs and PJ Sweeney at anchor combined for a time of 1:32.12.

Despite winning three total events, the Manhattan women saw a strong outing from the youth of their squad. Freshman Patricia Colton and Madison Brown were multiple winners on the day and were two of the top point scorers for the Jaspers. 

Colton made her debut in stellar fashion, winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.92 seconds, less than 0.7 seconds off the school mark. She almost set another program record in the 100 free, finishing first with a time of 56.63 seconds. 

Meanwhile, Brown earned her first collegiate victory in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall at 1:02.37 seconds. The two rookies, along with classmate Sara Buckley and junior Kim Geissler took first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.95 seconds.

Junior Kerry Schuermann also performed well in her season debut, scoring second place finishes in four different events. She, along with Vanessa L'HeureuxPaige Raccioppi and Colton finished second in the 200 Medley Relay. Schuermann then took second in the 100 back, 200 back and 200 Individual Medley. 

Both teams are scheduled to return to the pool on Sat., Nov. 2 as they host another MAAC rival in Iona at 2 p.m.
