FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Katie Cizynski and Brittany Obi-Tabot combined for 39 points to lead Fairfield (11-6, 5-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) to a 76-50 victory over the Manhattan College women's basketball team (5-12, 2-4 MAAC) on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
After the Stags jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, the Jaspers went on a 6-2 rally, pulling within two on Monica Roeder's (Marlton, N.J.) three-pointer at the 16:40 mark. However, Fairfield scored 11 of the next 15 points to increase its lead to nine, 19-10, with 12:44 left in the first half. The Stags extended their cushion to 15 points when a Cizynski jumper made it 32-17 with 4:01 to go before halftime, but Manhattan responded with a 9-2 spurt to get back within eight, 34-26.
Fairfield took a 36-26 advantage into the locker room, then opened the second half with two quick buckets to increase its margin to 14 points, 40-26. After the sides traded baskets, Toni-Ann Lawrence (Elmont, N.Y.) hit a jumper to spark a 10-2 Manhattan run that brought the Jaspers within six, 44-38, with 14:54 remaining.
Allison Skrec (Roselle, N.J.) sank a jumper to make it 55-48 Fairfield with 8:59 left, but the Stags' Katelyn Linney immediately countered with a trey on the other end. That three-pointer proved to be the knockout punch, as Fairfield scored 21 of the final 23 points en route to a 76-50 victory.
Roeder led the Jaspers with 13 points. Lawrence added 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting, while Shayna Ericksen (Hackettstown, N.J.) finished with 11 points. Skrec contributed nine points to go along with a career-high four rebounds and a team-best four assists. The Jaspers shot 48.9 percent (22-of-45) from the field, 28.6 percent (2-of-7) from long range, and 50 percent (4-of-8) at the line.
Obi-Tabot just missed a double-double, finishing with game-highs of 20 points and nine rebounds. Cizynski recorded 19 points and four assists, and Linney registered 12 points on four three-pointers. Alexys Vazquez added 11 points, while Brittany MacFarlane had eight points and five rebounds off the bench. Felicia DaCruz handed out 10 assists, as 22 of Fairfield's 30 baskets were assisted. The Stags shot 54.5 percent (30-of-55) from the field and outrebounded the Jaspers 37-15. Fairfield shot 32 percent (8-of-25) from three-point land and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) at the charity stripe.
Manhattan plays five of its next six contests at home, starting with a 4 p.m. matchup against first-place Marist (11-6, 6-0 MAAC) on Friday. Friday's contest, which will be broadcast live on ESPN3 as the "MAAC National Game of the Week," is the opener of a Manhattan basketball doubleheader. Following the women's game, the Jasper men take on Loyola at 7 p.m.
