NEW YORK, N.Y. - In their third game in six days, the Manhattan men's soccer team struggled to find their offense as they fell 2-0 to local rival Columbia (1-2) on Wednesday night.
A hotly contested game saw the Jaspers aggressive offense get plenty of opportunities, outshooting the Lions 14-10 in the game. However, Columbia goalkeeper Michael Attal was up to the task making eight saves in the game.
The game would be scoreless after one half of play, but four minutes into the second frame Columbia would break the deadlock as Nick Scott scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute.
Manhattan (0-4) would come right back after the kick-off and get a brilliant scoring chance as forward Naru Park blasted a shot on goal that was saved by Attal. The Lions would immediately go on a counter-attack with Quentin Grigsby beating goalkeeper George Ellis with a header off a corner kick from Scott in the 52nd minute to provide a 2-0 margin.
The Jaspers continued to pepper the net, looking for a goal, forcing Attal to make six of his saves in the second frame. However, he would remain stalwart and keep Manhattan off the board as they dropped their fourth straight contest.
Ellis finished the game making five saves on the day for Manhattan. Both Isa Konneh and Jake Scavetta picked up yellow cards in the game while Columbia's Brenden O'Hearn was also issued a caution.
The Jaspers return to action on Tues. Sept., 11, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on the Temple Owls.
