RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Three Jaspers had double-doubles, as the Manhattan College volleyball team picked up its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win of the season on Saturday afternoon. Mariana Furquim (Curitiba, Brazil) led the way with 15 kills and 14 digs in the Jaspers' (6-8, 1-2 MAAC) 24-26, 25-14, 25-17, 25-21 victory over Marist (4-9, 0-3 MAAC) at Draddy Gymnasium.
Five of Furquim's kills came in a first set that saw seven ties and six lead changes. Marist held an early 4-3 advantage before the Jaspers went on a 5-0 run to go up 8-4. After a kill by Furquim put Manhattan in front 19-12, the Red Foxes claimed 10 of the next 12 points to take the lead, 22-21. Ellie Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and Alexa Lampasona (Remsenburg, N.Y.) pounded kills on the next two points to put the Jaspers back in front. Marist tied it at 23-23, but Lampasona followed with another kill to bring Manhattan to set point. However, the Red Foxes responded with three straight kills by Hanna Stoiberg to take the set, 26-24.
Marist carried its momentum into the second set, building a 4-2 cushion before the Jaspers rallied for six straight points to go up 8-4. After a Sarah Haselhorst (Naperville, Ill.) service ace put Manhattan up 16-7, Marist won three of the next four points to bring the margin to seven points, 17-10. However, a block by Lampasona and Furquim on the next point ignited a 4-0 Manhattan run, and the Jaspers extended their lead to 21-10 on a Wiekamp ace. Juliana Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) slammed a kill to give Manhattan its first set point at 24-13, and the Jaspers won the set by a 25-14 margin to even the match at one set apiece. Manhattan hit .333 (16 kills, five errors, 33 attempts) in the second set, while Marist hit .000 (6-6-37).
In the third set, a Furquim kill broke a 4-4 deadlock and sparked a 7-2 rally that gave the Jaspers an 11-6 cushion. Manhattan extended its lead to 17-9 before Marist went on a 6-3 run to trim the margin to five, 20-15. However, the Jaspers scored four of the next five points to reach set point. On Manhattan's second opportunity to close it out, Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) pounded a kill to finish off the set, 25-17.
Manhattan quickly opened up a 4-1 lead in the fourth set. After a kill by Wiekamp put the Jaspers in front by an 8-3 margin, Marist went on a 6-3 run to pull within two, 11-9. Kills from Lampasona and Furquim gave the Jaspers a 13-10 advantage before the Red Foxes rallied for the next five points and took a 15-13 lead after back-to-back aces from Stoiberg. The Jaspers knotted the score at 16-16, but Marist claimed the next two points to regain the lead.
The Jaspers again rallied to tie it before Marist scored the next point to go back in front, 19-18. After Manhattan won the next point to even things up for the fourth time in the set, a block by Lampasona and Wiekamp gave the lead back to the Jaspers, 20-19. A Marist error brought the Jaspers to match point at 24-21, and a Kelsey Huntoon (Monroe, Mich.) ace capped the win. Manhattan took the fourth set by a score of 25-21.
Furquim recorded four blocks to go along with her double-double, while Wiekamp tallied 10 kills and 14 digs. Jamie Collareta (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) handed out 43 assists and added 12 digs. Volovski contributed 12 kills, and Lampasona slammed eight kills on .438 hitting while also recording five blocks. Huntoon led the Jaspers with 16 digs, as Manhattan outdug Marist 74-65. As a team, Manhattan hit .238 (55-20-147) in the match.
Katie Estes and Audra Brady both posted double-doubles for Marist. Estes finished with 14 kills and 13 digs, while Brady had 22 assists and 13 digs. Mackenzie Stephens notched nine kills and six blocks. Stoiberg filled out the stat sheet with 21 assists, seven kills, six blocks and five aces. Brooke Zywick led the Red Foxes with 15 digs and Gena Russo added 12 digs. Marist hit .095 (45-30-158) as a team.
The Jaspers continue their six-match homestand on Sunday, when Siena (8-7, 3-1 MAAC) visits Draddy Gymnasium at 2 p.m. Siena recorded a 3-0 victory over Saint Peter's on Saturday.
